A 26-year-old man has been jailed for 20 months after breaking into two vehicles and stealing another vehicle before police finally caught up with him after a blue light pursuit through the streets of Sutton.

Tony Grant’s trail of crime began when the driver’s window of a Mini Cooper was smashed and a handbag stolen in the car park at St Andrew’s United Reformed Church, Northey Avenue, Cheam, on Wednesday, 13 April.
Moments later a Sat Nav was stolen after the window was smashed of a Citroen Berlingo van in Sandy Lane, Cheam.

On both occasions, a black Ford Kuga was seen driving away.

Police then received a further report the same day of a white delivery van being stolen from the Oaks Sports Centre, Woodmansterne Road, Carshalton.

The white van was seen to drive off with a black Ford Kuga.

The black Ford Kuga and white van were spotted by officers out on mobile patrol in the borough.

They pursued the white van for around 25 minutes as it drove through red lights, mounted pavements and drove at high speeds across the borough. The vehicle was stopped in Croydon Road, Beddington. Grant was inside. He was arrested.

The Ford Kuga was found abandoned off Beddington Lane with the stolen Sat Nav and other property inside. The Kuga had been stolen in a burglary in Chipstead.

At Croydon Crown Court on Wednesday, 18 May, Grant (dob: 13/08/1989), of no fixed abode, was sentenced to 20 months’ imprisonment after pleading guilty to two charges of theft from a vehicle, theft of a vehicle, driving whilst disqualified, dangerous driving and driving without insurance.

A deputy manager, who used his office keys to let himself into his workplace at night, stole £5,413 from the safe – but was caught on the premises’ CCTV.

Frank Lubega had entered the Betfred branch at the north end of High Street, Sutton, at 03:18hrs on Wednesday, 12 August 2015. He went to the safe at the back of the shop and stole all the money except for around £200. He left two minutes later.

The theft was discovered by the shop manager when she turned up for work at 07:30hrs that day. She tried to contact Lubega, but there was no reply from his mobile phone. He was due to turn up for work that afternoon but failed to do so.

The shop’s CCTV was checked and Lubega was identified. He had made no attempt to cover his face and had no reason to be in the store at that time. He was arrested on Monday, 17 August.

At Camberwell Green Magistrates’ Court on Friday, 20 May, Lubega, of Furness Road, Morden, was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment suspended for 24 months after pleading guilty to theft by employee. In addition, he was ordered to carry out 180 hours of unpaid work, pay £5,413 in compensation and £250 costs.

PCSO rounds up loose horses from the borough's streets

24/5/2016

It’s not every day that police officers get called to horses running free amongst traffic on the borough’s streets.

But that’s exactly what happened on Saturday, 21 May when an off-duty PCSO on his way to work reported seeing horses on the loose and unattended in Winifred Road, Coulsdon, at 06:30hrs.

Responding to the emergency call, six police officers arrived to find four horses and one foal making their way from Clifton Road into Bramley Avenue.

The officers realised they had to act quickly to stop the horses from reaching the busy A237 Woodcote Grove Road.

One of the officers, PC Jose Fernandez, used his outstretched arms to marshall the horses whilst PC Ger Geehan used the police car to block their path and encourage them to turn around whilst the other officers helped to keep the horses away from passing vehicles.

After two hours the officers had managed to corral the animals into the safety of a cul-de-sac at the north end of Grove Lane where they waited until a charity arrived to provide assistance.

Another of the officers – PC Joe O’Toole – was praised by his colleagues for his ‘horse whispering’ skills in keeping the animals calm before they were loaded into horse boxes and checked over by a vet who reported they were all fit and healthy.

PC Geehan said: “For a time it felt like we were in a Wild West film running around the streets after horses. Although the horses were running around, we managed to keep up with them.”

PC Fernandez commented: “It’s the closest I have ever been to horses.”

The rightful owners can contact Sutton Police station on 101.
