Carshalton and Wallington MP Tom Brake has contacted 24 of Carshalton and Wallington’s Councillors (Carshalton Central have already pledged their support) urging them to add their ward to a list of over 150 London wards backing making London a National Park City.
This initiative has gained cross-party support, as well as support from a majority of Londoners. It will be at no cost to Sutton Council, since it will be fully-funded by the commercial and private sectors. Tom said, “We are very fortunate to live in a bustling, metropolitan city that encompasses miles of parks and walking trails. I call on local Councillors to support making London a National Park City. It will help preserve and protect our beautiful green spaces here in Sutton and the rest of London. I support this initiative to make London a healthier and greener place to live.” Currently, London has fifteen National Parks. A Great London National Park would be similar to these 15, but would not require legislation or formal planning powers. This National Park City would include all the conservation efforts of a traditional national park, but in an urban environment. This semi-protected area includes people’s homes, workplaces, and gardens, and aims to improve the quality of life in London.
