Met Police and Sutton Council officers are working closely with businesses across the borough to stop sales of age restricted products to children.
The message to retailers is 'No ID - No Sale' and 'Challenge 25' which requires retailers to challenge customers who appear to be aged under 25 to provide photo ID to prove they are aged 18 or more. People of Cheam are being urged to donate chocolate eggs to the Garwood Foundation and beat last year's collection of 500 chocolate eggs.
For the first time, the annual Access Self Storage Easter Egg Appeal is open to residents of Cheam. Generous locals are being challenged to beat last year’s national collection, which saw 500 chocolate eggs given to eight charities across the UK. Every chocolate egg collected in Cheam will go to the Garwood Foundation, an independent local charity which provides services and support to adults and children with disabilities. “We’re donating a sizeable storage room to house as many chocolate eggs as possible, so if you’re buying Easter Eggs for friends and family, please think of the children and adults who are cared for by the Garwood Foundation, who may not all get visitors over Easter, let alone a chocolate egg,” said Gabriel Kroukamp, manager of Access Self Storage Cheam. “Any chocolates, biscuits or cakes you kindly drop off will be stored safely here and taken straight to the Foundation,” Kroukamp continued. “Easter is even earlier this year, but if we can collect enough eggs over the next few weeks, we’ll make it an even happier occasion for many who are in need of magic and cheer if they can’t be at home with their families.” Staff have already begun collecting eggs and people are invited to bring donations into the Cheam store any time before March 24th. The eggs will then be delivered to the Garwood Foundation. Over the past five years, Access Self Storage has collected over 2,000 chocolate eggs for dozens of UK charities. In 2015, the most generous participating town giving the most chocolate eggs to the Access Self Storage Easter Egg Appeal was Coventry, collecting 140 eggs, followed by Manchester with 100 and nearby Kingston in third place with 54 eggs. In 2014, Kingston was the second most generous town, once again collecting 50 eggs. Kroukamp said: “It is hoped that these eggstra statistics will encourage residents of Cheam to want to smash Kingston’s record and help us collect more than 54 eggs to help our chosen charity”. Police in Sutton are appealing for information to locate this vehicle which was stolen along with 1,500 bricks from within the grounds St Philomena’s School, Carshalton, on Tuesday, 16 February at around 19:30hrs. Three males wearing hi-vis jackets were seen loading the bricks into the back of the vehicle before driving it out of the school grounds and onto Sutton’s streets where it immediately caused tailbacks. The vehicle was spotted in Wrythe Lane, Carshalton about an hour later at 20:30hrs. Police believe the vehicle is sufficiently distinctive for the public to remember it. Being electric, it may have run out of power within Sutton Borough or in a neighbouring borough. If you know the whereabouts of this vehicle, or have any other information to help, contact Sutton Police station on 101 quoting ref no: 4001836/16. The incident was attended by Wallington’s Pump ladder and Sutton’s Pump ladder and Pump The fire was discovered by a neighbour leaving early for work who alerted both older occupants and called the brigade. The residents, were in their 70s and had working smoke alarms. Smoke did not enter their main residence due to the speedy response and actions of the crews, therefore the smoke alarms did not operate. Following the incident firefighters gave advice to neighbours and offered Home fire safety visits. Sutton Council’s consultation into changes to adult social care required to by the Care Act 2014 will close on Sunday 21 February.
Changes to the Care Act enacted by central government have introduced options to the way in which people are financially assessed and supported. The changes are most likely to affect those living in nursing or residential homes, those paying for their own care, carers, and those who receive assistance from social services and are still living at home. Carshalton and Wallington MP, Tom Brake, received good news in a recent debate in Parliament when the Conservative Rail Minister said that the Chancellor agreed that better compensation for delayed trains must be given to commuters.
Tom Brake MP tabled an adjournment debate calling on the Rail Minister to implement a fairer ‘Delay Repay’ scheme for train commuters. His proposed ‘Delay Repay’ scheme would reduce the minimum threshold for Delay Repay from 30 minutes to 15 minutes, imposing on poorly-performing train companies 50 per cent compensation of the single fare for a 15 to 29 minute delay, and 100 per cent compensation for delays of 30 minutes or more. Tom said, “It is good news to hear that the Chancellor supports a better compensation deal for rail passengers but I am worried that the Minister did not provide a date when this would be implemented. Tom added, “In the last month, I have written to all London MPs asking them to support my plans for a fairer ‘Delay Repay’. I was disappointed that only two of them have signed up and the Labour and Conservative Mayoral candidates aren’t amongst them.” Carshalton and Wallington MP, Tom Brake has signed a cross-party letter to the Prime Minister, demanding the Government scrap the tax credits ‘rape’ clause.
The letter, signed by Members from all parties across the House of Commons, is challenging the proposal for a rape clause that would require women whose third child is a result of rape, to testify in front of Government officials that she had been raped to secure an exemption from the loss of tax credits for her third child. It also states that the clause needs more clarification and is “simply immoral.” The signatories are asking David Cameron to throw out this clause altogether, as it “has no place in twenty-first century Britain.” Tom said, “This clause would only humiliate and belittle those who are victims of such painful attacks. It is absolutely absurd for the Tories to ask a victim of sexual assault to prove their assault in order to secure tax credits. I urge the Government to think of all the families who could be affected as a result of this legislation, and scrap this ‘rape’ clause.” Sutton Police are appealing for information following a racially aggravated assault on two Asian brothers aged 13 and 14 who were attacked whilst playing football on the St Helier Open Space on Thursday, 4 February at around 18:00hrs.
When the brothers went to retrieve their ball, they were abused and spat at by a group of seven white males aged 14-16 approx who had been sitting on a bench close to the junction of Wrythe Lane and Robertsbridge Road. One member of the group hit one brother in the neck and then punched the other brother in the face causing a cut to his lip and soreness to his teeth and causing him to fall to the floor where the group members tried to run over him with their mountain bikes. As the other brother went to use his mobile phone to call police, one of the suspects took his phone and threw it on the ground causing slight damage to the phone. The suspects are described as white males. They were wearing dark hooded tops with their hoods up, except one who had blond hair. They made off towards Tweeddale Road and onwards to Middleton Road.
