A 26-year-old man has been jailed for 20 months after breaking into two vehicles and stealing another vehicle before police finally caught up with him after a blue light pursuit through the streets of Sutton.
Tony Grant’s trail of crime began when the driver’s window of a Mini Cooper was smashed and a handbag stolen in the car park at St Andrew’s United Reformed Church, Northey Avenue, Cheam, on Wednesday, 13 April.
Moments later a Sat Nav was stolen after the window was smashed of a Citroen Berlingo van in Sandy Lane, Cheam.
On both occasions, a black Ford Kuga was seen driving away.
Police then received a further report the same day of a white delivery van being stolen from the Oaks Sports Centre, Woodmansterne Road, Carshalton.
The white van was seen to drive off with a black Ford Kuga.
The black Ford Kuga and white van were spotted by officers out on mobile patrol in the borough.
They pursued the white van for around 25 minutes as it drove through red lights, mounted pavements and drove at high speeds across the borough. The vehicle was stopped in Croydon Road, Beddington. Grant was inside. He was arrested.
The Ford Kuga was found abandoned off Beddington Lane with the stolen Sat Nav and other property inside. The Kuga had been stolen in a burglary in Chipstead.
At Croydon Crown Court on Wednesday, 18 May, Grant (dob: 13/08/1989), of no fixed abode, was sentenced to 20 months’ imprisonment after pleading guilty to two charges of theft from a vehicle, theft of a vehicle, driving whilst disqualified, dangerous driving and driving without insurance.
