A deputy manager, who used his office keys to let himself into his workplace at night, stole £5,413 from the safe – but was caught on the premises’ CCTV.
Frank Lubega had entered the Betfred branch at the north end of High Street, Sutton, at 03:18hrs on Wednesday, 12 August 2015. He went to the safe at the back of the shop and stole all the money except for around £200. He left two minutes later.
The theft was discovered by the shop manager when she turned up for work at 07:30hrs that day. She tried to contact Lubega, but there was no reply from his mobile phone. He was due to turn up for work that afternoon but failed to do so.
The shop’s CCTV was checked and Lubega was identified. He had made no attempt to cover his face and had no reason to be in the store at that time. He was arrested on Monday, 17 August.
At Camberwell Green Magistrates’ Court on Friday, 20 May, Lubega, of Furness Road, Morden, was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment suspended for 24 months after pleading guilty to theft by employee. In addition, he was ordered to carry out 180 hours of unpaid work, pay £5,413 in compensation and £250 costs.
