2016 is the centenary of Cub Scouting which started nine years after the Scout Movement began and locally it was decided to celebrate the event by organising a weekend Camp based on old and new Scouting, but also incorporating the Brazilian Carnival and Olympics.
The event CUBARNIVAL 2016 was born.
"We have nearly 700 Cub Scouts in Sutton and we wanted to ensure all Cubs irrespective of the family financial situation could attend. The event was going to cost about £70 per head which for a weekend was out of the pockets of some of our packs in Beddington, Rosehill etc, so we set about seeking sponsorship and fund raising," said a spokesperson for the cubs.
We adopted the Cub Mascot Snaggles as an aid to our efforts to raise money for the celebrations and he has his own website www.snaggles2travel.co.uk which tells the stories of his adventures either with our Cub packs or on trips with individual to discover more about the world.
He is currently on a camping trip to Sweden with our group 11th Wallington. Pictures are coming up on twitter from them. He is then off on Safari with another family before completing his summer fun with a trip to Sri Lanka. He has also booked his trip to the World Scout Jamboree in Japan next year with one of our local Scouts who has been selected to attend.
We started with a sponsored Cub and Beaver event on 5th July where the children were sponsored to see how many bases they could complete in 100 minutes.
The cub scouts are now looking for sponsors or donations towards the next event with is the Snaggle hunt.
Some already have stepped forward and offered us prizes and both Paul Burstow and Tom Brake have kindly donated a tour for four of the Houses of Parliament with tea on the Terrace. Surrey Cricket donated four tickets for a match which we raffled as their season was almost over before the Hunt finished.
Organisers have created images which reflect the various activities that cub scouts undertake and have located 30 addresses across the Borough with vaguely appropriate businesses who were prepared to display the A4 images, with unique numbers, throughout the summer holidays.
"We were unable to get anyone to hold paper entry forms and collect the entry fee, so decided to use our My donate page to collect payment https://mydonate.bt.com/events/snagglehunt/149010 and then they send us their receipt number and we issue an entry form containing postcodes and a map with location points. Snaggles Hunt page http://snaggles2travel.co.uk/wp/?page_id=3199 on the website has a map and images which would help them realise that it is not the same picture they are looking for.
"The first correct entry received will receive £50, but all other entries will go into a draw in September for all the other prizes.
It is basically a treasure hunt using postcodes and a map to find their way round Sutton( An activity we try to undertake with our Cubs)."
