Sutton and Cheam MP Paul Burstow will be the first to answer questions on Friday 10 October.
And then the following week Wallington and Carshalton MP Tom Brake will be n the firing line.
"The Listening Events are an opportunity to learn more about the Care Act, and put your questions to your local MP on issues that concern you," said a spokesperson.
"The event will help explain the implication for the borough's residents on the Care Act but also give all particvipants to question their MPs on issues that affect them.
The Care Act is the biggest reform of social care since 1948 and opens the door wide to access to care. For councils there are a lot of “must's” and “should's” "Do you know what these are and how they will affect you? And did you know that parts of the Care Act come into effects from as early as April 2015?
"For example, under the Care Act:
• Local authorities must provide an Information and Advice service that is accessible to everyone in the local population and not just service user – and this must be up and running by April 2015
• Carers’ rights are now included in the law. Under the new legislation, carers have a legal right to be assessed for local authority support, something which they previously did not have.
• The cap on care costs of £72,000 does not include living costs (e.g. board and lodgings in care homes, or any top-ups or extras and it also does not allow for people to be refunded for monies paid before April 2016.
• People receiving publicly funded or publicly arranged (even if privately funded) care are now protected by the Human Rights Act. However, this protection is not afforded to people who self-fund and privately arrange their own care.
• People are entitled to their own ‘care accounts’ which will track, amongst other things, their expenditure on care to monitor when they reach the cap on care costs.
These are just a few of the many changes wrought by the Care Act. What does this mean for your care in the future, or for the more immediate care needs of your loved ones? And if you’re a carer, what are the things you should take special notice of?
