The Sutton Schools Air Pollution project was carried out by Groundwork London and funded and supported by Sutton Council. It aimed to spread awareness about air pollution in the local area with Car Free Day marking the end of the project which has reached 2000 parents, pupils and teachers and directly engaged with over 400 pupils in delivering air pollution workshops including producing stop frame animations.
The event also supports the One Planet Sutton vision that aims to reduce pollution and congestion and to decrease borough transport carbon emissions by 20% by 2017; also to increase use of alternative/sustainable transport for journeys to school and increasing wellbeing by leading healthier, more active, lives.
The pupils also produced an animated video urging people to walk to school – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=30r8_Siktys
Council Leader Ruth Dombey said: “Car Free Day is a great initiative that will educate our borough’s youngsters about the need to look after our environment. Sutton has always prided itself on its green credentials and events like this will ensure that the borough continues to lead the green agenda”
Kate Cummings, School Travel Co-ordinator, All Saints added: “It’s been fantastic. Car Free Day has really brought the whole school together. Even the little ones in the reception have been really getting into it!’
