A spokesperson from the club has sent Sutton Voice the following report:
"Our Christmas collections are well under way! So far, we’ve driven Santa Claus around much of Worcester Park and North Cheam in two nights of collecting for local charities. We’ve been doing our Santa collections for 28 years now and have raised many tens of thousands for brilliant local causes. Last year alone we collected over £9000. Most of our collecting ‘elves’ are members of our club, Sutton Nonsuch Rotary, but we rely heavily on help from other organisations, such as TREES, Age Concern and The Scouts and individuals who, regularly and unstintingly, come around with us.
"It’s always very satisfying to see the look on the kids faces as they see Santa, passing by their homes! He always stops to the sound of the Christmas tunes we play – as loudly as we dare – and gives them a merry wave! Some of the older children and their parents take photos as well as putting money in our collecting pots!
This year we’re supporting Phab, a charity that helps disabled children by bringing them together with the able bodied, Shopmobility, which provides a loan service of wheelchairs, powered scooters and electric wheelchairs for people in Sutton who have trouble getting about, Sutton Alzheimers Society who support local people with dementia, and AGE Concern, Epsom and Ewell, who give a huge range of help to old folks in their area.
"Here’s where we’ll be next:
on Monday 8th all those roads in Worcester Park between St Phillips Ave and Embury Ave;
on Tuesday 9th all roads adjacent to Dorchester Road and Clarkes Ave;
and on Thursday 11th, all roads between Ardrossan Gdns and Kinross Ave and Vale Rd.
Thanks to the support of our friendly local supermarkets, we’ll be collecting outside Tescos, on the Sutton by-pass, From Friday 12th to Sunday 14th.
So many thanks to everybody who helps and supports us and especially to those amazing people who generously put their hard-earned money into our collecting pots!"
