"We are the Nonsuch Rotary Club. We meet at Chipstead Golf Club for a meal on a Wednesday evening, usually followed by an invited speaker," said a spokesperson.
"We combine having a great time with doing our bit for local, national and international charities. Already this year, we’ve raised more that £12,000 through our Father Christmas collections and other fund raising events. We’ve had rambles, played golf, skittles, been to concerts and done other fun things together.
"Most of our twenty four members are retired and we come from a range of backgrounds, for example, building services, accounting, teaching, taxi driving, car dealing, shipping, the Civil Service and so on. So we are a good mix of easy to get on with people.
"Rotary is well established, world wide and has an excellent reputation. It has a long history and its motto is: ‘Service Above Self’. Each of us has joined Rotary with the aim of ‘giving something back to society’. We want to feel we are helping those who need that help. We give our time rather than our cash but we collect money to give to the needy.
"Among our projects are: a Swimathon, where anyone can enter and be sponsored to swim lengths in a pool; the Bizz Quizz where we invite teams to join us to compete for a range of prizes; Youth Speaks, a competition for school children to compete in public speaking; Music Nights, in which we play a selection of recorded music, chosen to fit a particular theme; and, of course, our famous Father Christmas collections.
"We are very keen to attract new members. You don’t need to be retired to join us but anyone who is retired or about to retire would find it really rewarding to be a part of what we are and do. All are welcome to become members. We are aiming to have thirty members by this time next year and have already attracted one new one in the last couple of weeks.
"If you are interested please ring our secretary, Chris Forkan, on 07949 072524. We’ll invite you to be a guest at one of our meetings and take it from there!"
