The drumming group was set up by the late British Heavyweight boxing champion Gary Mason, who lived in Wallington, which he regarded as having ‘therapeutic benefits’ and continues as a charity in his memory. One of the trustees of this award-winning charity is a Met Police crime scene manager based in Sutton.
Other attractions at the free, Open Day from 11am - 4pm on Sunday, 7 September, includes:
- demonstrations by drugs dogs
- police dog puppies
- police horses
- a mock crime scene run by murder squad detectives
- latest police cars and motorbikes
- the Met’s vintage vehicle fleet and uniforms from past years
- interactive sessions for children with members of the Territorial Support Group, which deals with demonstrations and major incidents
- tours of the police cells with its charging counter
- tours of the police control room, which hosts the Sutton Council funded CCTV system - with its bank of large monitors capturing images from the 80+ cameras located around the borough
Unfortunately the marine unit will not be coming for operational reasons.
There will be many stalls including Sutton’s licensing team, volunteer police cadets and Neighbourhood Watch.
An estimated 4,500 visitors poured through the front gates at Sutton Police Station during the last main Open Day on Sunday, 2 June 2013 - beating the previous highest attendance in September 2010 when 3,700 visitors attended.
Safer Neighbourhoods Acting Inspector Emma Gulczynski, who is organising the event said: “We’re just putting the finishing touches to the final arrangements and keeping our fingers crossed for good weather and bumper crowds.
“Come and see us, have some fun and learn how we’re working to keep Sutton safe,” she said. Last entry is at 3.30pm.
