Sutton College Floristry students will be brightening up the centre of Sutton on Saturday 19th March, leaving ‘Blooming Lovely’ bouquets for people to find around town and take home.
The idea, inspired by ‘The Lonely Bouquet’ initiative set up to spread the joy of flowers and make strangers happy, will involve small bouquets being left around central Sutton to be ‘adopted’ and either taken home or passed on to someone who will appreciate them. Floristry tutor Terri Rabson said ‘The students are happily entering into the community spirit and are creating these bouquets as part of their Floristry Level 2 course at Sutton College. It’s great to think that they will brighten the days of those that find them and show off the skills learned on our course. We can’t wait to hear where they end up’. The City & Guilds Level 2 Floristry course enables students to pursue a career in commercial floristry either in a flower shop or if they are thinking of starting their own business. Bouquets will be left around central Sutton on Saturday 19th March. If you find a bouquet, please let the College know via the Sutton College Facebook or Twitter sites or by email on [email protected] Details Sutton College is the premier provider of adult education and training in the London Borough of Sutton offering over 1000 part-time courses in the day and evening. COURSES Students across Carew Academy took part in Safer Internet Day: a scheme to promote safe internet use.
Students prepared in advance for the day by tackling different subjects that arise when using the internet – how to spot something out the ordinary, online bullying, who to speak to if you have concerns about anything you have seen online, how to use social media safely, what to do if someone asks to meet you in person, and other important topics. In groups, students put together presentations which they then showed to the school in a Safer Internet Day assembly. Head of Upper School, Emmet Murphy, who said “I believe there is a real need to raise awareness of safe internet use. There is a stack of research that shows high quality e-safety in school not only keeps pupils safe, it also leads to pupils enjoying stronger and healthier relationships in adult life. We’ll definitely do more work of this nature”. Former Carshalton College BTEC National Diploma in Music Technology student Chloe Ray is a regular face at the open-mic nights at ‘The Brook’ in Wallington. Chloe recently released her debut EP ‘The Waiting Room’ on record label 84 Records. The EP consists of four tracks which were recorded at The Brook in Wallington by a talented and inspiring producer tutor; Andy Brook. ‘The Waiting Room EP’ is a magnetic collection of songs, which are deeply moving and telling of personal struggles, hope and survival. Chloe’s songs can be downloaded from ITunes! As well as Record of the day, Chloe has also been asked by the BBC to announce and introduce her track of the day. Chloe said “It was a dream to work on this record!” Chloe particularly enjoyed creating a diverse range of music on the Music course. Chloe commented “My tutor and peers were really supportive which inspired me to record my first song." Chloe continuted "I gained an incredible amount of confidence to continue to perform and write.” Chloe learnt how to use Cubase and Logic and is currently using a home recording studio utilising the skills she learnt at College to record her demos. eA Year 10 Greenshaw student visited with a teach the Woodlands School in Leatherhead recently to attend a whole school assembly. They were welcomed by the students, parents, staff and headteacher, Mrs Knight, who accepted a cheque for over £1000 – which was raised from the recent mufti day.
The student promoted awareness about the school through assemblies, explaining some of the conditions of the students who attend there, and the development of a sensory learning room which the fundraising will contribute towards. St Ivo School 2 Stanley Park High 0
Stanley Park High School U13’s Girls football team put up a great fight in the last eight of the Nationals The U13’s travelled three hours to Cambridgeshire for one of their biggest games in school football. With the quarter finals being the furthest SPH girl’s football have ever got, they definitely felt the pressure on their shoulders. From the whistle the match was extremely even- no one could call the game either way. The girls fought hard and ran tirelessly on a huge pitch. With a goal less first half, SPH were raring to go in the second half. St Ivo’s player of the match crossed a perfect ball from a free kick into the box where the ball deflected into the Stanley Park goal allowing the opposition to go 1-0 up. The girls battled hard and created more opportunities than St Ivo but couldn’t find the back of the net. Five minutes before full time St Ivo scored a similar goal to the first. The Carshalton High School for Girls Elite Youth Company of dancers successfully reached the regional heats of The Great Big Dance Off competition which took place on the 29th February.
Their dance piece was an emotional, lyrical and contemporary composition entitled "Break the Silence" and focused on the serious issue of human trafficking. By doing this piece they hoped to raise awareness of this important ongoing issue. With after-school rehearsals they got the chance to perform in the annual school dance show where they received great feedback from the audience. In a statement on the website it said: "The girls performed absolutely fantastically on the evening but sadly they did not get a top 3 place, competing against popular hip-hop acts. However, they did get placed 7th out of 22 schools and, given that our girls were 2-3 years youngers than the other performers, they did so well. This fabulous result has just made us more determined for next year!" There was a promise of an exhilerating Glenthorne School gym show and it didn’t disappoint!
The Gym Show proved to be an incredible showcase for the gymnastics talents and skills of our pupils, featuring acrobatics, tumbling, trampolining, vaulting and cheerleading. The audience were left gasping at the energy, dynamism, strength, grace, discipline and fearlessness of the gymnasts who gave an exciting and confident display. The theme for this year’s show was “High Frequency”, featuring music drawn mainly from the 1970s and 1980s which provided an exciting soundtrack to the gymnastics. Every single pupil excelled and showing that practice really does make perfect. Wilson's School students in the final year of their GCSE Music course performed in a recital evening in the Bowden Room recently. This was the last chance that the students had to perform in public before submitting performance coursework.
The programme was very varied: it included piano duets, a Debussy piano trio, vocal ensembles, solo items (including works by Schubert and Liszt), and two rousing performances of folk music on drum kit. Performing in an ensemble is much more challenging than performing solo and requires students to listen very carefully to each other to ensure a good balance of dynamics and articulation. In a statement on the website it said: "Many thanks to all of the boys who performed, to the music staff who supported the event and in particular to parents for their support both on the evening and with boys’ preparations before the evening itself." Homefield Preparatory School has produced a series of creative and eye-catching short films to showcase the wonderful breadth of skill and talent currently present within the school.
There will be a total of six short films for current and prospective parents to digest, ranging from intellectual expertise in the maths classroom to stunning sporting displays on the pitches and in the gym. The films will be available to view on our website from Thursday 10th March. The featured film this week is ‘Future Sporting Heroes?, appearing on the home page, whilst the rest of the collection will be available in the School Life section of the website. "The films were created by Liz Smith from entertaining:tv and she has done a wonderful job of portraying all the different strengths of our boys. Indeed Liz had previously worked with Headmaster, Mr John Towers, on a film for the charity ‘Reach to Teach’, so we were well aware of her creative genius.," said a spokesperson. "The films will also be showcased on our social media platforms, so do keep an eye on our Facebook and Twitter accounts" |
