As schools return from their summer break, Carshalton & Wallington MP Tom Brake is encouraging them to get involved in this year’s UK Parliament Week.
UK Parliament Week takes place between November 14th and 20th and aims to get pupils to connect with parliament and generate a better understanding of British politics. Tom regularly makes visits to schools around the constituency, most recently a drop-in to a Public Services BTEC class at Stanley Park High School, Carshalton on Monday 12th September. Parliament Week aims to add to that political engagement with organisations across the UK running events which explore what the UK Parliament and democracy means to them and their community. Tom said: “Tom Brake said: "I often speak to local residents in Carshalton and Wallington who are keen to find out more about Parliament and politics. Parliament Week is a great opportunity to see how decisions made in Westminster have an impact on everyone's lives. "Organisations can get involved through mock debates, exhibitions and lectures. More ideas can be found on the Parliament Week website.” (http://www.ukparliamentweek.org) Sutton Council has been notified that the Department for Education has approved a proposal from the Harris Federation to open a new secondary school in the borough by September 2018.

The meeting presented an opportunity for the Mayor and his team, including the statutory Deputy Mayor of London, Joanne McCartney AM, and his Deputy Mayor for Business, Rajesh Agrawal, to meet key leaders from across the sector, bringing them together to ensure that London’s top HEIs are able to continue to flourish and innovate, and that students from around the world still feel welcome here and regard London as a top place to study. The Mayor also spoke about the opportunities open to London’s HEIs of the growing international student market, stating the importance of a supportive visa system which encourages international students to work in the UK post-graduation.
