Greenman is a project organised by AgeUk Sutton which is responding to a need identified by its users engagement group.
"A peer survey conducted by user engagement group One Voice for Age Sutton found that many men prefer to do something useful and practical, rather than sit and chat in social groups. Many of those interviewed said gardening was an activity they would like to be involved in, utilizing skills learned previously and being engaged in "honest" and practical work.," said a spokesperson. "Rather than attend social groups where the focus was on sitting and chatting, the men sampled in the survey were in favour of doing practical and useful things. "Gardening was a strong favourite, with many wishing to utilize skills learned previously, when times were hard and growing your own fruit and vegetables was a valued (and at times, life-saving) activity. " "An allotment in Roundshaw has been developed for the Greenmen group, including a shed, gardening equipment and tea/coffee making facilities as well as tables and chairs for people to take a break and relax. An eco-portaloo is on site, and the allotments are flat with wide, straight paths, making it very accessible. "All older men aged 50 and over are welcome to be part of Greenmen. It is hoped that the group will cultivate fruit and vegetables, which can be taken home. Surplus produce can be distributed amongst clients in other Age UK Sutton projects, who would welcome fresh, home-grown produce. However, it’s a Greenmen democracy, and members can discuss their plans for the allotment, what they’d like to grow and yield, and how best to use it."
