Local Giving is an exciting campaign spreading across London which aims to create cross-sector partnerships to tackle the priority issues in each borough, and support local charities to improve lives across the community.
The Sutton Community Fund (managed by Sutton Centre for the Voluntary Sector and funded by Sutton Council) has secured funding to create a Local Giving campaign in Sutton and the organisations would like businesses and local people to get involved and shape this innovative project. If you are interested in being involved in the campaign contact either of the following: Susanna Bennett, Sutton Centre for the Voluntary Sector [email protected] 0208 664 2867 Tom Alexander, Head of Strategic Business, London Borough of Sutton [email protected] 020 8770 4522 Sutton Housing Partnership and London Urban Arts have been working together to run some exciting workshops for 14-18 year olds.
For the past few weeks, a specially converted multimedia studio bus has been parked up at Brunswick Road in Sutton, offering young people the chance to take part in sessions to mix music tracks and have a go at fashion design by making their own t-shirts. The single-decker bus has been converted into a multi-media studio designed to inspire and empower people building confidence through music production, rap & vocal recording. It’s kitted out with multiple music work stations and plasma screens. One of those taking part told us: “I love music. These sessions are really cool. I like being able to put my own tracks together.” The project has been a great hit, with everyone saying they had fun, made new friends and left with something they had made. Supporting and helping with the initiative was Emma Pearson, Community Development Officer at SHP, who said: “This has been a great chance to engage directly with young people and it’s a wonderful way for them to express themselves through creativity." The Sutton Supporter Group of St Raphael’s Hospice is organising their bi-annual Craft Fair on Sunday 15 May 2016.
St Raphael’s Hospice will be holding its Craft Fair on Sunday 15 May 2016 between 1100-1500 in St Bede’s Conference Centre. £1 entry for adults, free for children. There will be something for everyone: beautiful handmade gifts and crafts to buy; lovely raffle and tombola prizes to be won; and refreshments available including delicious homemade cakes and savouries. What better way to spend a Sunday! This year’s Cheam Charter fair, will be taking place on Saturday 14th May. Stall bookings are free and bookings are being taken until 30th April from organisations or individuals based in Sutton or adjoining boroughs. A series of events in the week leading up to the fair are brought together under the title Cheam Charter Week. Events booked in so far include a friends of Whitehall introduction meeting, a free yoga taster session, Dramabuds free taster session and plenty more! A highly innovative project involving young carers in Sutton has just been completed.
The project run by the charity Create has seen the organisation collaborate with Sutton Carers Centre during half term to engage young carers in a collaborative music experience, enabling them to compose and perform original pieces of music under the expert guidance of professional musicians Mike Poyser (a world-class tuba player who plays with the Philharmonic and has performed at the BBC Proms) and Phoebe Osborne (a multi-instrumentalist and composer). Eight in ten young carers report that caring has had a negative impact on their health, with 50% feeling unsupported. Isolation is a frequent risk faced by these young people because the demands of caring can leave them feeling overworked, minimising opportunities to socialise with their peers. By working together and having complete creative control over what they are producing, these young carers are developing confidence in their abilities and feel proud of what they can achieve outside of their caring role. Carshalton and Wallington MP, Tom Brake, was one of a number of guests invited to the launch of the new Women’s Hub in Carshalton. The launch took place on the 5th April. The Hub is believed to be the first of its kind in London. The new Hub will provide vulnerable women with mentoring, benefit advice and a range of other support services. The aim is to help women make a positive change in their behaviour by providing them with a friendly environment in which they can receive help and encouragement. Tom said, “It was great to celebrate the launch of the new Women’s Hub in Carshalton. It is crucial that we give vulnerable women the tools they need to make a positive change and turn their lives around.
