Nightcrawler
OCT 31 | Crime/Drama/Thriller | Cert TBC†
A nerve-shredding thriller set in the sleazy, cut-throat world of LA crime journalism. Unemployed and broke, Lou Bloom (Jake Gyllenhaal) is thwarted at every turn as he searches for work. Then he happens upon a car crash, where an intrusive, hard-nosed cameraman is delighted to be first on the scene. This is Lou's introduction to the seedy lifestyle of 'nightcrawlers' - roving freelance camera crews whose motto is, "If it bleeds, it leads." He's soon out on the streets, desperate to beat his rivals to crime scenes, pile-ups and major fires. His recklessness and dedication impress tough-minded TV executive Nina. But the temptation to go one step further in pursuit of a scoop lands him in deep water. Jake Gyllenhaal lost 20 pounds in weight to become the gaunt nightcrawler for this gripping voyage into LA's seamy underbelly. It's the directorial debut of 'Bourne Legacy' co-writer Dan Gilroy.
Interstellar
NOV 7 | Adventure/Mystery/Sci-Fi | Cert 12A
Explorers journey though a wormhole in space to save humanity in this mind-bending sci-fi from the director of 'Inception'. Single father Cooper (Matthew McConaughey) is a highly trained pilot. But his skills are redundant in a future world that seems to be turning into a hostile dust bowl. Then a scientist (Michael Caine) persuades him that it is time for mankind to look to the stars for salvation. His idea is to make use of a recently discovered wormhole in space to find habitable planets. But to take part in this risky, pioneering mission, Cooper will have to leave his two young children behind. Visionary 'Inception' and 'Dark Knight' trilogy director Christopher Nolan has been typically tight-lipped about this extraordinary project. But he promises to add jaw-droppingly innovative visual techniques to his rich storytelling palette. The film also reunites him with Catwoman actress Anne Hathaway. Watch out too for the cameo by Matt Damon.
