The new Mayor of Sutton Councillor Arthur Hookway paid tribute to the arts community when he launched Arts Network Sutton at Sutton Life Centre on Thursday 12 June. The Mayor praised the contribution that arts make to the quality of all our lives.
NS Chair Steve Penneck said: 'The launch was a great event showcasing some of our local performers, from all ages - probably from 8 to 80! It was a good chance to network and get to know each other better. Many thanks to all who participated.' SAVVY Theatre Company is dedicated to youth and community arts and is putting on a range of events over the coming weeks. It is constantly busy - both with development ideas and a wide array of one-off and on-going projects & events. Just some of what's currently underway include: My Black & Deep Desires - which is a Wandle Valley drama project, re-interpreting the themes of Shakespeare's MACBETH. From the same opening, two versions have emerged. Both as bloody. Both as mean. Both with power and with greed . Pupils will be performing their devised pieces at the Wandle Arts Day in July. 500 Miles - Come and meet Bernard as his daily routine is interrupted by the arrival of a letter. A letter that has traveled 500 miles and back again. Suddenly the course of his life has a very different outlook. "When I wake up, well I know I’m gonna be …" The SAVVY Young Company is once again taking part in this year's Surrey Youth Drama Festival, devising a brand new theatre piece using full-face masks from Strangeface Theatre Company 7pm, 14th June, Ivy Arts Centre, University of Surrey, Guildford. Tickets: £5.00 / Box Office: 01483 - 686 876 Great Train Robbery - The Action Replay group have once again devised a brand new theatre piece, re-creating the Silent Film era live onstage. "All Aboard! Come and join a collection of odd-ball characters as they journey on an old steam train. But beware! There’s mischief afoot as a band of robbers are determined to get their hands on the contents of that safe! Will the duchess get her jewels back? Will the lovers re-unite?Will anyone be able to grab the tea-lady’s buns?A melodramatic caper full of laughter, love and locomotion!" After their success at the annual Strictly Stars event at the Secombe Theatre in May, they will be taking their show to Guilfest in July. There is a new network in town! The Arts Network is a new organisation which promotes, champions, nurtures and acts as a voice for the arts in Sutton. It has taken on this role from Sutton Arts Council. The borough has a great history of arts and now the network wants to see it develop even further. "Our key event is the launch on the 12th June, where we will be looking to sign up new members. The event will also be an opportunity for people to become part of the new exec committee and take a lead role in the organisation," said a spokesperson. They are looking for volunteer hosts who will be working with the people who come in, to ensure that everyone has an enjoyable time, meets new friends and feels welcome at the theatre. "We need volunteer hosts who are sociable, interested in meeting new people and open to trying new activities," said a spokesman "We will programme activities for young children and their mothers, fathers or grandparents, for older people who may not want to go out in the evenings and for people with disabilities. "Our Volunteer Hosts may take a leading role (reading stories to children, helping with drawing or craft, leading book group discussions) or be a facilitator, perhaps joining in with a knit and natter, or welcoming people to a social gathering. Many of these activities will be in the daytime and during the week although there will be some evening activities welcoming people to the shows. We would ask our Volunteer Hosts to make a commitment to host regular events so that our visitors get to know you and feel sure of a warm welcome. For more information email [email protected] |
