Over the Christmas season, households accumulate extra waste as wrapping paper, present packaging, and food containers start to pile up. All of this can be recycled rather than thrown out, saving money for everyone in Sutton.
The first event took place at Rosehill on Friday 20 November. Despite the cold the dedicated roadshow team were in demand answering questions and queries from the public. They also enjoyed some extra-special help with the aid of a sculpture created by students of Carshalton College who built a bright Christmas tree using only recycled materials.
Cllr Jill Whitehead, Chair of the Environments & Neighbourhood Committee, said:
“Recycling is something which we can all do in our own homes to make a direct, positive impact on our world. Sutton’s recycling rate is above the national average but there is still more we can do to improve and achieve our One Planet Sutton goals.
“The excellent tree sculpture made from recycled items by Carshalton College students just emphasises the point that rather than just throw things away, we should always be looking to see how we can reuse or recycle items.”
UAL Level 3 Diploma in Art & Design Year 1 students at Carshalton College created the sculpture over the course of several weeks in preparation for the roadshows.
Miriana D’ambrosio, Tutor at Carshalton College, said:
“Our students put a lot of effort into the tree sculpture and we’re really proud to see the results of their hard work. We’ve had so much positive feedback about it from the public – if you haven’t seen the sculpture yet there’s still time if you can make it to one of the recycling roadshows over the next few weeks.”
The recycling events will continue during the build-up to Christmas as the roadshow visits the following locations:
Friday 4 December 2015 Cheam High Street 4 - 8pm
Saturday 5 December 2015 Carshalton Village Market 9.30am - 4pm
Friday 11 December 2015 Worcester Park High Street 4.30 - 9pm
Carshalton College’s tree-mendous tree sculpture will be on show at all the above roadshows – so it’s well worth coming along and admiring the artwork as you learn about saving money by recycling more.
