CAN (Cheam Academies Network), the Trust that runs Cheam High School, has now submitted its application for a new secondary school for Sutton.
In a statement on the CAN website it said: "The Trust (CAN: Cheam Academies Network) has had a very busy few weeks, visiting many primary schools to talk to parents/carers, publicising its vision for the proposed school on its website (www.canschools.co.uk) and talking to the local school community. Alongside this, it has also spent much time putting together a detailed bid for the Department of Education with support from the national education charity New Schools Network.
"The bid for the new secondary school, which the Trust plans to open with 195 Year 7 places from September 2018, was submitted on 2 March 2016. The next step is likely to be an interview in a few months with Department for Education representatives as part of their process of scrutiny. The outcome of the bid is likely to be known by September 2016.
"The Trust would like to thank the 30+ primary and secondary schools that wrote in support of its bid, as well as over 1000 members of the local community. Expressions of support from parents/carers of potential future students were very high, with more interest shown for the first cohort of Year 7 than places available.
Dr Rosemary Satchell, Chairman of the Trust, reported:
“The Trust was delighted with the very positive reception its bid for a new Sutton secondary school received from the local community. The feedback indicated that the Trust’s existing local secondary school was held in very high esteem and that parents/carers were very welcoming of the idea that the Trust would run a new school based on Cheam High School’s outstanding provision. We would like to thank all those who have written in support and look forward to reporting back to you on our progress”
