The challenge involved students working in groups of four, buying and selling shares and currency over a virtual trading week, just as traders do in dealing rooms every day. The activity was fast paced and enabled students to analyse information under pressure and work as a team. Each team started off with £15,000 to invest in nine companies and the US dollar. They reacted to articles in five daily newspapers, radio bulletins and news reports. The team with the highest portfolio at the end of trading were declared the winners. In a statement on the school's website Miss Mountford, Director of Careers and Enterprise, said: “Feedback from students showed that they really enjoyed the fast moving pace of the activity and it continues to be one of the most engaging and dynamic enterprise events. It is designed to develop key skills in leadership, communication, organisation, initiative and resilience, which will support our students in the next phase of their education or working lives. It has been a sporty time at Sutton High students.
On Sunday 7 February, the school's U14 gymnasts entered the South East British School Floor and Vault Competition in Gravesend. "The girls performed their floor routines beautifully and produced some very strong vaults. Competition was extremely high, with some schools entering A and B teams! The girls gained a very respectable 5th place. Well done girls - you should be very proud of your performance," said a spokesperson. On Tuesday 2 February, the U14 hockey team played against GDST rivals Croydon High. Our defenders were kept busy in the first half, and they successfully prevented Croydon from scoring. The second half was end-to-end, with both teams having many shots on goal. In the last five minutes of the game, Sutton were the stronger team, spending most of the time in Croydon’s attacking quarter. There were some very close shots on goal and good saves by the keeper, but a quick break by Croydon in the last minute of the game resulted in a goal – leaving the final score 1–0 to Croydon. Sixty students from Years 9 and Year 10 of Stanley Park High School undertook the UK Intermediate Maths Challenge last week.
With thousands of schools across the country, Stanley Park High students participated in this exhilarating contest where in just an hour they tried to answer twenty-five multifaceted calculations. One year 10 student, said, “Although it was very difficult, I really enjoyed being pushed to my mathematical limit. I think the Challenge has made us all better mathematicians.” Glenthorne High School's year 7s enjoyed the annual visit to the Natural History Museum in London recently.
Travelling up to the iconic London museum adorned with the flora and fauna of the world, they were greeted by the famous diplodocus in the entrance gallery and the imposing staircase that is presided over by the naturalist Charles Darwin. In the mammals’ gallery, pupils sketched a life-drawing of their favourite specimen. On to the volcanoes and earthquakes where pupils experienced a Japanese earthquake and located the most dangerous volcanoes of the world. All were interested to see how humans have evolved over the years and were fascinated by the small heads and ape-like features of the early hominids. A team of Wilson's School sixth formers and staff set off at 5.00 a.m. on the long journey from Wilson’s to Wolverhampton recently to take part in the infamous Tough Guy competition, which consists of an 8 mile run (with a few obstacles thrown in), an assault course involving crawling under barbed wire, fear climbs, lakes to wade through, complete submersion in cold muddy water, many a hill to run up and down, tunnels, woods to navigate through and many other hazards.
This all took place on a cold January day with biting wind, thick mud and rain. The sixth formers were joined by a number of hardy staff who also took part, plus a band of supporters and cheerleaders made up of more staff and parents. Cheam High School students took a trip recently to see what it would be like to study medicine at Kings College London.
The students took a tour around some of the fascinating labs, lecture halls and libraries. They participated in workshops that included: learning how to take a blood transfusion, blood pressure taking, CPR and we were even allowed to take part in a drunkenness simulator. The group were shown some of the effects of alcohol on balance and co-ordination and got to learn more about specific branches of medicine such as key-hole surgery. Stanley Park High School 5 Cornelius Vermuyden 0
The U13 girls of Stanley Park High School football squad have made it into the last eight of the country, proving themselves in a decent 5-0 win away to a school in Canvey Island, Essex. The girls have stormed through the rounds and are now going into the last stages, two games away from the final. SPH started the game confidently. Tia had a fantastic game on the left wing, proving a huge threat to the Cornelius Vermuyden side. Lacey, Halley, Evie and Tilly were linking up very well upfront passing in triangles and switching play and finding the space out wide. Lacey opened up the score with a superb left footed shot from outside the penalty box. Five minutes later Halley smashed the ball into the back of the net allowing SPH to lead 2-0. Evie worked tirelessly on the wing playing in some effective balls which lead onto a great goal putting SPH up 3-0 at half time. The confident SPH knew we could not let our heads slip going into the second half as the opposition were going to come out hard. Morgan and Poppy worked hard at the back, stopping any chances Cornelius had of breaking through our defence. Lacey added to SPH’s score with another goal slotted past their keeper. Within the final minutes, Tilly gained a well-deserved goal after her fantastic efforts and commitment to the team. Stanley Park are now the only team in the whole competition to not concede a goal, a great achievement in itself.
