Marie-Luiza De Menezes has developed a Choosing Childcare Workshop for local parents and carers in need of clear information on choosing childcare in one practical session. "As a mum who had to get to grips with demystifying the different childcare options from pre-schools through to au pairs, I realised there is a real need to share that knowledge in a supportive environment. So as an experienced trainer I put together a session with user friendly information and practical steps to help parents get their childcare sorted." It was a time to swing back to the fifties and sixties for some nostalgic music and stylish outfits when the latest addition to Carshalton High Street - Dotty's Teahouse - celebrated its opening with a vintage-themed tea party recently. Party-goers enjoyed a selection of tea-time treats and Surrey-made Silent Pool Gin served in china teacups, while singers The Haywood Sisters arrived in a classic Morris Minor to entertain the guests. Owner Rebecca Mackenzie is building on the success of a pop-up tea room in Kingston. She wants to broaden her horizons in Carshalton, starting a number of arts and crafts workshops for local enthusiasts at the back of the shop: ‘My aim is to make Dotty's a real community hub, so we'll be hosting all kinds of workshops and clubs: sewing, knitting, floristry, paper craft and much more. Our motto is “tea, cake and creativity” and I hope everyone who visits us leaves feeling inspired.’ Former Mayor of Sutton, Councillor Muhammad Sadiq congratulated Rebecca and her partner Dave Jones on creating six new jobs in the village and released a bunch of balloons, each containing a surprise gift. The lucky finders of the balloons will discover an invitation hidden within to enjoy an indulgent afternoon tea for two at Dotty's – the first new teahouse in the village for many a year. The petition, which had 691 signatures, was placed in the bag behind the Speaker’s Chair in the House of Commons. It has been sent to the Government. Speaking after presenting the petition, Tom said: “ ‘‘It’s clear that many residents are concerned that a vital part of frontline health services are at threat of being taken away from communities. These closures could deprive many people from receiving easily accessible medicines advice and valuable support from trained professionals.’’ The overwhelming feeling against the Government’s proposals is obvious, residents don’t want pharmacy closures and don’t want their communities losing such a valuable service in the face of more brutal and unnecessary cuts from the Government.” Tom has been working closely with leading pharmacists who are running a postcard, petition and online campaign called #loveyourpharmacy. Tom spoke recently at an event organised by the pharmacists where they, Healthwatch representatives and customers were able to put their concerns about the closures to Tom. He has since taken them up with the Health Minister.
