HMRC has issued an advisory note to let employers know that it is in the process of emailing an employer alert. These emails are headed Important information for employers and refer to Employer Bulletin 60. These emails are genuine and include valid links to pages on the GOV.UK website.
Taxpayers still need to be aware of the many phishing emails that are purported to come from HMRC. The sender’s email address can sometimes point to a fraudulent email although fraudsters have been known to falsify the 'from' address to look like a legitimate HMRC address for example '@hmrc.gov.uk'. Fake email messages can appear to be genuine but clicking on a link from within the email can result in personal information being compromised and the possibility of computer viruses affecting your computer or smartphone. If you are unsure as to the validity of any email it should not be opened until the sender can be verified. HMRC has always made it clear that they do not send notifications of tax rebates by email nor do they ask recipients to disclose personal or payment information by email. Government plans to cut £170 million from pharmacies in 2016/17 have been met with strong opposition from local pharmacists and campaigner Tom Brake MP. If government plans go ahead, an estimated £660,000 would be slashed from Sutton pharmacy budgets, putting up to 11 pharmacies at risk of closure. Tom showed his support for local pharmacists at the St Helier Festival last Saturday, with a stall explaining their vital role. Tom said: "When I met local pharmacists, they told me that the reasons for the Government changes have not been explained and the public will receive a worse service. Pharmacies are able to take pressure off GPs and A&E Departments, meaning people in need of urgent care are seen more quickly. Proposals to cut pharmacies would put local people in danger and that is why I am fighting to keep them open. Cuts on this scale would be a bitter pill for our pharmacies to swallow and could lead to a large number of closures." There are three main stages to taking part in the campaign, notifying HMRC that you wish to take part, preparing an actual disclosure and making a formal offer together with payment. The campaign is open to all individual landlords renting out residential property. That includes landlords with multiple properties and single rentals as well as specialist landlords with student or workforce rentals. A revised version of the 'let property campaign notification' form (D01) has been published by HMRC. A notification that you wish to partake in the campaign can be made by completing and submitting the form online or by completing a form on-screen and then either emailing or posting it to HMRC. Landlords that make an accurate voluntary disclosure are likely to face a maximum penalty of 0%, 10% or 20% depending on the circumstance on top of the tax and interest due. There are higher penalties for offshore liabilities. There is currently no end date for the campaign. However, landlords who do not avail of the opportunity and are targeted by HMRC can face penalties of up to 100% of the tax due together with possible criminal prosecution. It is not possible to benefit from the terms of the disclosure once an investigation has been commenced by HMRC. "As the Queen celebrates her 90th birthday we take a look at some of the highlights. "For her 21st birthday the Queen received a Diamond Riviére Necklace consisting of twenty one graduated diamonds linked by smaller baguette and round diamonds. The necklace was later shortened and a matching bracelet made. The suite is still worn by the Queen and it is rumoured that she refers to it as her ‘best diamonds’. "In 1981 the Queen was bequeathed a Victorian Diamond Star Brooch by Lady Jardine. Star brooches of this form were one of the most popular motifs of the Victorian-era and the Queen was seen wearing hers on a number of occasions during her Diamond Jubilee year. "Other brooches favoured by the Queen include the Flower Basket Brooch, given to her by her parents to commemorate the birth of Prince Charles and ‘Victoria’s Bow Brooches’, a set of three diamond bow brooches commissioned by Queen Victoria in 1858 and frequently worn by Queen Elizabeth II. "The pieces of jewellery the Queen is never seen without are, of course, her Diamond Engagement Ring - a 3 carat diamond set in platinum – and her wedding band, crafted from pure Welsh gold from the Clogau St. David’s mine – the same Welsh gold that is contained within every piece of Clogau jewellery."
