The event is part of the Disability Confident campaign, through which government is working with employers to remove barriers, increase understanding and ensure that disabled people have the best opportunities to fulfil their potential. Employers are crucial to improving employment outcomes for disabled people.
Commenting after a very successful day, Tom said: “There are many myths about disabled people at work taking many days off sick, costing money to have adjustments made in the workplace and launching unfounded discrimination claims. In fact, all of these myths are wrong. I am pleased people with disabilities, employers who employ disabled people and potential employers were at the event. It was interesting to listen to their experiences and dispel some of the wilder notions about work and disability.”
Cllr Jayne McCoy added, “I was very pleased to attend this event which highlighted the great contribution that people with disabilities can bring to a business and debunks the difficulties associated with their employment.
Guest speakers included Kathryn Townsend and Danny Reardon from Barclay’s Accessibility Programme, Janine Loft from JobCentrePlus, Chair of the Housing, Economy and Business Committee and Steve Triner from the Sutton Citizens Advice Bureau.
