The council is supporting the local business-led initiative to create a Business Improvement District (BID) in Beddington.
It could generate up to £1.25m of ring-fenced investment for Beddington industrial area with businesses determining the projects and improvements.
Sutton Council is working with Regen Management, the specialist BID company, and firms based in the Beddington industrial area.
The Beddington Industrial Area is identified in the Mayor's London Plan as a Strategic Industrial Location (SIL) and as such is of key importance to the borough. Sutton Council successfully bid for funds which the Mayor of London has awarded to support the BID development.
The Beddington strategic industrial location is one of the largest employment locations in the South London.
The land in the strategic industrial location represents 70% of the Borough's employment land and 55% of the total built industrial floor space.
Beddington Industrial Area is home to 190 companies, many key not just locally to Sutton and London but also nationally and internationally.
A Business Improvement District will give businesses a stronger, united voice and a sustainable resource to carry out the improvements they want.
If successful, it would become the third BID in the borough.
One is led by the Kimpton Industrial Park Proprietors Association (KIPPA) which has attracted interest from the government with visitors including Chancellor George Osborne and Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg.
The second BID is the Successful Sutton town centre initiative which started in 2012 supports both existing High Street traders and business start-ups.
Cllr Jayne McCoy, Chair of the Economy, Business and Finance Committee, said:
“Sutton is a great borough to do business and we believe this is a fantastic way to drive growth in our local economy.
“It’s right that businesses are taking the lead and I urge all firms in Beddington to give their support so that they can benefit in the same way as those in our two other successful investment zones.”
A BID steering group of local businesses including DHL, Jewson, Viridor, P F Whitehead, F Smith & Son and Hydro Cleansing will lead on the project’s development.
Dave Piotrowski, Branch Manager of Jewson (Beddington Lane) and member of the BID steering group, said:
“As a company, Jewson is committed to supporting the local communities in which it works and Beddington is no exception, which is why we are encouraging more local companies to get involved in the Business Improvement District (BID) development. We believe the BID will help to enhance the trading environment and make a real difference to the area.”
“The companies that get involved in the BID work together to identify common issues or concerns for the area and decide on which projects the BID fund is spent on. It is fantastic to be a part of the Beddington BID Steering Group and we look forward to working with local businesses to drive the development forward and supply construction advice and building materials to the chosen improvement projects.” he added.
All businesses and landlords in Beddington are being encouraged to get involved and complete a short survey to identify priorities for the BID Business Plan 2015-2020.
