A woman on her way home from celebrating her birthday fought off a male robber who tried to grab her handbag. After an evening out enjoying a few drinks with friends in Sutton Town Centre on Saturday, 16 January, the woman caught a bus to Rosehill.
She got off the bus and walked onto the grass verge that divides Green Lane to cross over to St Helier Avenue near the Rosehill roundabout when she was approached by a man from behind sometime between 01:00-02:00hrs on Sunday, 17 January.
The man demanded her handbag. When she refused she was punched in the right eye causing her to fall to the ground.
The woman told the suspect he could take the bag, which had the strap around her shoulders, once she was back on her feet.
But when the woman stood up, she punched the suspect - causing him to fall over. The woman then walked off with her bag whilst the suspect left empty-handed in the opposite direction.
The incident was reported to police at mid-day on Sunday.
The victim has been treated in hospital for bruising and swelling around the right eye. She also had grazing to the right side of her face when she was knocked to the ground.
The suspect is described as a white man, of unknown age, wearing a light coloured hooded top.
Sutton CID is investigating the attempted robbery and are appealing for anyone who saw the incident to contact Sutton Police station on 101. Alternatively, call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
Detective Inspector Brett Roche, of Sutton CID, said the victim had shown great courage in fighting off the robber and keeping hold of her bag.
