Ellen Bristow, who is believed to be Sutton’s oldest resident, has celebrated her 103rd birthday with a visit from the Mayor. Ellen, a resident at the Roseland care home in Banstead, celebrated her birthday on Friday 15 January accompanied by her two children, Beryl and Terry, and their spouses.
The Mayor of Sutton, Cllr Muhammad Sadiq, and the Mayoress, his wife Aasia Sadiq, dropped by to wish the grandmother of two many happy returns, then presented her with a birthday card and some chocolates, before sitting down to enjoy a cup of tea and some birthday cake with her.
Ellen said:
“It’s lovely to be with my son and daughter on my birthday and it was such a surprise to meet the Mayor and Mayoress. I’ve had a very special day.”
Ellen was born in 1913, grew up in Didcot, Oxfordshire and has spent much of her life in Sutton. Her father, a greengrocer who travelled the country and worked at Covent Garden market, was killed in a road accident and her mother had to go out to work to make ends meet, leaving Ellen to bring up her two younger brothers and younger sister.
Ellen later married and was widowed in 1999. She lived independently at her home in Sutton until last year, when she moved into Roseland.
Cllr Sadiq said:
“We are delighted to have been able to share Ellen’s 103rd birthday with her. She is an inspiration to us all.”
