If you think your local pharmacist is a service you want to keep close by - then residents are being urged to help fight to protect them.
Carshalton and Wallington Last Thursday evening, Tom Brake MP, joined Reena Barai of S G Barai Pharmacy in Erskine Road and around 25 other pharmacists from LB Sutton and LB Merton for the launch of the ‘Love My Pharmacy’ campaign at the Good Shepherd Church in Carshalton Beeches.
Tom explained, “No less than 11 local pharmacies could be at risk of closure as a result of cuts which kick in in October. If closures go ahead, this would mean fewer professionals able to help with cholesterol tests, checking meds, diagnosis of heart problems and more pressure on GP surgeries and A+Es. It would also mean around two thirds of a million less going into providing health care locally.”
Reena added: “I see every day how important having a friendly and professional pharmacy is to local people, particularly elderly people and people with chronic illnesses. The Government 's proposed plans for Pharmacy will result in the closure of Pharmacies locally and this will have a detrimental effect on the public that currently rely on their local Pharmacy for healthcare advice and the dispensing of medication”.
The pharmacists and Tom were also joined by patients and Healthwatch members. Healthwatch have also pledged to follow up the issue.
Pharmacists have already got hundreds of postcards and petitions signed by their customers. Thousands more people are expected to sign in the next few weeks. Visit PHARMACY to find out how you can help to save your local Pharmacy from closing down.
