Carshalton and Wallington MP, Tom Brake, has condemned the Government’s eleventh hour decision to prevent young people under the age of 23 from buying a starter home. This blow became apparent after a last minute amendment to the Housing and Planning Bill tabled this week.
The amendment defines first-time buyers “as a person who is at least 23 years old but has not yet reached the age of 40.” Tom chided the Government for proposing another policy that hurts young people.
Tom said, “The Government has found yet another way of hitting the young with their policies. Between cutting schools’ budgets, excluding young people from the so-called living wage, and denying young people the right to vote in the EU referendum, the Government is now trying to stop young people from being eligible to buy starter homes. This is just another example of how the Tories are all talk and no action. They are not serious about helping young people onto the housing ladder, but would rather kick the rungs out from under their feet.
