Officers from Kingston & Sutton Shared Environmental Service Enforcement team assisted by police visited an 'astrological' business being run out of premises in Sutton High Street to check it was complying with consumer and health and safety regulations at lunchtime on Tuesday, 24 November.
The business had sub-let a tiny room inside a discount store and had a board outside advertising itself as an 'astrological centre' and making claims that they were able to protect from enemies and cure from black magic with 100% protection. Invoices found on the premises claimed to solve health, money problems and marriage problems and charging in some cases over £150.
The officers were exercising their powers to enter and inspect trade premises. They raised a number of health and safety concerns which are being communicated to the owner which included unsafe wiring and a taped up smoke detector.
Officers from Sutton Central Town Centre team, who assisted the councils' staff during their visit, arrested two people, both aged in their 30s, for illegal entry into the country.
Enquiries found that they had been employed by the astrological centre to hand out publicity leaflets as and when required to attract business.
The male and female arrested were taken to a South London police station and the immigration authorities have been informed.
Both Council and Police enquiries are continuing.
