When the moped rider saw a police car arrive, he used the fire extinguisher he had been setting off in the road to spray the police vehicle. He then kicked off one of the police car’s wing mirrors to goad police into a pursuit.
Riding off, the moped then pulled up alongside a police van. The rider raised his visor and said: “This is fun, isn’t it?” before encouraging police into pursuing him again.
Whilst continuing to be observed by police, more members of the public called to report the rider’s dangerous driving.
A police dog handler caught up with the moped rider who was with a group of youths robbing a cab driver. A window of the cab driver’s vehicle was smashed and money stolen from inside.
As the officer moved in to detain the rider, the rider struck the officer over the head with a brick and then in the face with a piece of wood. The cab driver tried to assist the police officer but was also hit during the struggle.
The moped rider was arrested. The police dog handler was treated for a head injury at St Helier Hospital, Sutton.
