Firefighters have issued a warning about leaving cooking unattended after a fire at a flat on Grove Road in Sutton.
Crews were called to reports of the smell of burning and a smoke alarm sounding at the four floor block on Sunday afternoon.
Station Manager Richard Field said: “When crews gained entry to the flat they extinguished a small fire which is believed to have been caused by a saucepan left on the hob. No-one was home at the time of the incident. Cooking should never be left unattended, if you have to leave the room or go out, turn you cooking off to avoid the risk of a fire. The smoke alarm sounded and alerted a neighbour, it really highlights the importance of having a working smoke alarm”
Around 60 percent of accidental fires in the home start in the kitchen but taking a few simple measures can make all the difference.
The Brigade was called at 1313 and the fire was under control at 1332.
Below are the Brigade’s top three tips for safety in the kitchen:
• Take pans off the heat and turn off the hob and/or grill if you have to leave the kitchen while cooking, and make sure the oven, hob and grill is turned off when you have finished cooking.
• Avoid cooking if you are tired, have been drinking alcohol or are taking medication that can make you drowsy.
• Keep handles of pans turned to the back of the hob and away from other gas burners/electric rings
