The funding helped Hello to stage a month long, and very popular exhibition, at Honeywood Museum and engage occasional tutors to give members a taste of new art forms.
Arts Network Sutton’s grants to members and member groups are making a real difference to just what they can achieve and how ambitious they can be. Eighteen months ago Hello Arts and Crafts, a community group for older people, was set up in South Sutton. Today it is a thriving and adventurous group and a £500 grant from ANS has played an important role in its success.
The funding helped Hello to stage a month long, and very popular exhibition, at Honeywood Museum and engage occasional tutors to give members a taste of new art forms.

Leaving her broken home, Deleila, aged 16 decides to run away to London, for she knows deep inside that only one thing will help to make her life message heard: pure creation via choreography. The Company's dance styles, with an element of theatrical expression, are perfectly depicted in “La Dolce Vita”, which with a wonderful cast of 28, takes the audience through a beautiful dance journey; the story of Deleila’s life and her passion for dance. The show delivers a real message of hope for it tells you that no matter how hard life can be, you must find a way to deliver your own message and try to “be the change you wish to see in the world” (Ghandi) for yourself and others. ‘Arts Network Sutton’s remit is to act as a networking, funding and advisory focal body for existing community arts groups and artists in the borough - and also to help develop opportunities for professional artists in the area. Over the next few months ANS is to develop a strategic plan as to how it is going to achieve this, which includes working with the London School of Communication to better define and understand the movement of artists and artistic activity out of the centre to the outer London boroughs. The project will identify how ANS can best support these artists.’ Other projects coming up over the next few months include the annual Youth Art and Open Art exhibitions at Sutton Central Library, a series of monthly workshops at the Secombe Theatre in Sutton on getting audiences, marketing events, fundraising and recruiting members and a proposed ‘art summit’ in April to establish just what the local arts community needs. A smart phone short film competition is also planned by Richard for young, aspiring film makers Young people with an active interest in all areas of the arts are required to help drive these exciting ideas forward. And, for those interested in a career in journalism and communications, volunteers are also required to source and write stories and features for the ANS newsletter and associated social media feeds. Anyone interested should apply without delay – a small team is required, so there is ample scope for involvement – and members of the ANS executive will be close at hand, to provide guidance and training. Anyone interested should contact Richard, email [email protected]; or 0793 250 1472. An Arts Network Sutton grant has helped Beddington-based photographer Bill Mudge to realise an ambitious, year-long project with a major exhibition planned for a gallery in Carshalton in March.

The students are pictured outside Nonsuch Mansion House, where historian John Phillips gave them an informative guided tour.
