Sutton transferred their recent impressive away form to Gander Green Lane on Saturday, ending a run of three home games without a win in convincing style against a Havant side who had shown signs of improvement in recent weeks after two victories, but who were as anaemic as any side to have visited Sutton this season as Ross Worner's biggest problem was how to stay warm during his lengthy spells of inactivity on by far the coldest day of the season so far.
After Ross Stearn had seen a shot blocked inside the first couple of minutes it took U's a while to start creating chances, and it wasn't until midway through the half that Ryan Young was called in to serious action as Dundas turned to send in a firm shot which the keeper tipped over the bar. From the resulting corner taken by Stuart Fleetwood, though, some dreadful Havant defending allowed the ball to reach the far post where McAllister stabbed it in to the net. Young made another good save from a Ross Stearn chip, and also had to scramble to keep out a deflected Dundas effort, while at the other end the only glimmer of a chance for Havant came when their recent loan signings, Godfrey Poku and Theo Lewis, combined as Lewis failed to get any direction on a header from Poku's cross.
Just before half time U's gave themselves some breathing space as McAllister's challenge for a Stearn cross saw the ball fall to Dundas, and although his volley was going wide McAllister's reactions at the far post saw him improvise with a back-heeled deflection in to the net. The striker came out with a different shirt in the second half, having blocked a clearance with his face during the first half, while Havant's reaction was to replace captain Brian Stock with Scott Donnelly at the break, but it did nothing to change the course of the game or dilute the threat that McAllister and Dundas contined to pose, with Stearn and Craig Eastmond also prominent in an increasingly dominant performance. Stearn created one chance with a chipped cross to the far post following a set piece, Dean Beckwith knocking the ball back across goal and Downer's shot cleared off the line. McAllister made way for Tommy Wright with just under twenty minutes left, while Fleetwood was also forced off after taking a blow in the ribs, but U's continued to control the game and with eleven minutes left Dundas grabbed a richly deserved goal as he stretched to turn the ball in at the far post from Stearn's corner.
Wright's astute pass required Young to come off his line quickly to deny Stearn, and the keeper also held a stinging shot on the turn from Dundas, and Havant's afternoon worsened with four minutes to go when an off the ball clash between Downer and Warren Cummings saw the Sutton defender left on the ground and Cummings shown a red card by referee Rick Hulme.
