Sutton & Epsom 71 – 5 Twickenham
On a cold afternoon at Rugby Lane the crowd were given ample entertainment to keep them warm as Sutton ran up their best score of the season to defeat Twickenham 71-5. It was a fitting end to a magnificent campaign that has seen the Black & Whites win the London One South title by 14 points from nearest rivals Guildford. A late first half penalty and another goal midway through the second condemned the Sutton Common Rovers first team to a 2-0 defeat at promotion chasing Ashford Town (Middx)
Elsewhere in the division, Hartley Wintney moved to within two points of the title with an emphatic 10-0 win over Raynes Park Vale, whilst Camberley Town defeated Guildford City 2-1 to hang onto second spot on goal difference, although they do have a game in hand on Ashford (in third). Epsom & Ewell weathered a late Hanworth Villa comeback to record a 3-2 win, whilst their were wins for Horley Town, Windsor, Farnham Town, Knaphill and Redhill. With both Redhill and Chessington & Hook dropping points recently, the first team are safe for another season Redhill needed to win all four of the remaining games and hope we did not pick up another point, if they were to catch us, but a 4-0 defeat at home to Ashford Town (Middx) sealed their relegation fate (barring reprieves further up the pyramid). Chessington & Hook needed to win all six of their remaining fixtures to overhaul us, but drew 0-0 at Westfield, which secured our position in the division. Chessington can still catch Badshot Lea, but would need to win all of their remaining fixtures (including Camberley and Windsor), with Badshot failing to pick up a point For full details of all of the club's activities go to ROVERS Sutton United 2 Chelmsford City 0
Sutton duly picked up the points needed to clinch the Vanarama National League South championship in a straightforward manner, extending the unbeaten league run to 25 games and recording a third consecutive home 2-0 win. For twenty minutes Chelmsford, in reasonable form of their own going in to the game but with little to play for having secured their status for next season, threatened to make life difficult, and Ross Worner was required to show the quality that had seen him presented with the Supporters' Club Player of the Year award before the game, but even at that stage U's were playing with confidence and once Dan Fitchett had put the finish to one of several good moves there was only going to be one outcome, and little over an hour later, after a second half which at times had the intensity of a pre-season friendly, Paul Doswell and his players were taking the well-deserved acclaim of their supporters and receiving the championship trophy. Former Crystal Palace, Arsenal, QPR, Newcastle and England defender Kenny Sansom will be appearing at Gander Green Lane on Friday 20th May, the evening before his former club plays in the FA Cup Final, along with ex-Chelsea defender Gary Chivers for a question and answer evening, reflecting on a career that saw him win 86 England caps and play in two World Cups, looking back at this season and assessing England's chances in the European Championships.
Details Admission is £10 and the evening starts at 8pm with the bar open from 7. For further details email [email protected]. Carshalton Athletic 4 Peacehaven & Telscombe 0
