Nine-year-old Louis from Carshalton is football mad, so when he was diagnosed with a life-threatening brain tumour two years ago, it put a stop to him playing and he was devastated. Treatment included surgery to remove the tumour along with his pituitary gland so he no longer produces his own hormones and now needs regular medication. His parents and teachers also carry an emergency injection in case he goes into adrenal crisis. Fitness4Less in Gander Green Lane has launched a join for free offer. There is no joining fee on our monthly no contract membership. Sutton entered the brave New World of National League rugby with a comprehensive win in Buckinghamshire. It was appropriate that as Champions of London One South they should face the Champions of London One North in the season opener. It was the Southern title holders that returned home with the spoils. A stoppage time header by Francois Gabbidon gave the Sutton Common Rovers first team all three points against Spelthorne Sports recently, writes Gary Brigden
A dull first half, which saw Spelthorne go close with an effort that looked to have crossed the line, but was not flagged by the linesman, ended scoreless. Miguel Anderson fired us ahead three minutes into the second half, before a well worked move saw Spelthorne level on the hour. Both sides had chances, with Spelthorne hitting the post and having a shot blocked by skipper Richie Monan. At the other end, substitutes Andrew White (just unable to connect with a Matt Robinson cross) and Liam Holden (hitting the outside of the left post), both went close for us, before Gabbidon struck in stoppage time. An entertaining match on Monday at Gander Green Lane in the Ryman Youth League Central Division was decided in the 85th minute as Woking took home three points in the game against Sutton United youth team. The visitors got off to a perfect start as Josh Greenleaf found himself unmarked three yards out from a corner and powered a header past Sandile Wydler-Manzi. Greenleaf was then denied a second with a well-struck free-kick which Wydler-Manzi did well to push around the post, then at the other end Darnell Austin’s free-kick resulted in a corner that eventually made its way back to Austin and his long-range strike went wide. Woking continued to pepper the Sutton goal with efforts from range but Wydler-Manzi stood firm under pressure. Sutton gradually came back into the game though and good work from Andrius Lucauskas resulted in his low cross somehow being diverted away from Josh Danquah at the far post. Danquah then skipped around his marker and saw his low cross diverted into the side netting by Tobi Adaje, and Kieran Rhule’s strike from 20 yards drifted harmlessly wide, but in the 34th minute Austin’s free-kick squirmed through the keeper’s arms and came off the far post before nestling in the back of the net. Jamie Blanco was next to test the keeper as his free-kick was awkwardly saved at the second attempt and on the stroke of half-time, intricate play on the edge of the visitors’ penalty area led to Lucauskas touching through to Danquah but he could only fire wide under pressure. Sutton's long trip north to Tyneside had a frustrating outcome on Saturday when, having easily done enough to deserve a point, they came back empty handed after substitute Rhys Oates, five minutes after coming on to make his debut having signed on loan from Hartlepool, punished one of the few moments of slack defending to score the only goal. The goal came after a spell in which U's had dominated but, for the second week running, they failed to turn that pressure in to goals and, while having given Chester a two goal lead they were always struggling, this time there is every probability that had U's scored in that stage they would have had at least a draw to show for their efforts. |
