On the attack for much of the game, Sutton endured a frustrating afternoon at Gander Green Lane as they failed to take the chances that were created and allowed Weston-super-Mare to claim a vital point in their battle against relegation.
A point seemed the limit of the visitors' ambition, Scott Wilson left to plough a lone furrow up front throughout the afternoon, but they could easily have left with all three, Ross Worner making two fine saves either side of half time.
At the other end Luke Purnell, although never convincing when the high ball came in, managed to block everything in the first half although after the break he wasn't tested as much as he might have been as U's efforts lacked accuracy and became increasingly desperate.
Just before half time U's frustrations might have increased as a misplaced pass allowed Wilson a run on goal that was only ended by a foul for which Dean Beckwith was booked, and Dayle Grubb's free kick needed to be turned away by Worner.
The second half followed a similar pattern and, realising that the threat fron the visitors was minimal, Dan Spence was soon sacrificed for a striker as Jamie Slabber was sent on, but U's failed to make the most of his abilityto win the ball in the air and hold it up. Bolarinwa twice headed wide at the far post when he should have hit the target, Ross Stearn and Nicky Bailey supplying the crosses, but there was another wake-up call for U's when Downer's poor clearing header from a corner fell to Grubb, whose powerful shot was superbly stopped by Worner. U's failed to clear their lines, and Ben Withey's low cross only just evaded Wilson.
That was just about Weston's last visit to the Sutton penalty area, and it became a question of whether U's could force the victory against an obdurate defence. Both Stearn and Burge sent free kicks too high, Bolarinwa and Bailey both shot wildly from promising positions, and from the best chance Stearn shot across goal after being put through on the left. U's kept pressing to the end, Bolarinwa glancing a header just wide in stoppage time, with Purnell earning a booking for the time it took him to take the goal kick, but the keeper will have worried little as his team celebrated a hard-fought point.
