The entertainment at Gander Green Lane this season continued on Saturday, but for Sutton it will have been tempered by frustration as they led twice, only for Concord Rangers to equalise on both occasions and produce the sixth draw in seven games between the sides.
Sutton could have scored inside the first minute when Dan Wishart picked up a loose ball just inside the Concord half and produced a direct run and fierce shot which went just too high, and they came even closer when Dan Fitchett lifted the ball in to the penalty area following a Spence throw-in, and Craig McAllister's looping header was tipped on to the crossbar by goalkeeper Ben McNamara and cleared as it came down.
It was a mixed half for Spence with throw-ins, as he lost grip of the ball on each of the next two, both in promising positions, and was penalised for a foul throw on each occasion.
Ross Worner had little to do in the first half, but for all their good football U's struggled to create many clear chances and their best effort came from a set-piece when Stuart Fleetwood's corner was glanced just wide by Dean Beckwith. In the last of the 45 minutes, though, Fleetwood attacked before slipping a pass through to McAllister, and the experienced striker clipped the ball convincingly past McNamara to record his first Sutton goal.
It meant that Concord needed to show a little more ambition in the second half, and Steve Cawley and Joe Gardner pushed up closer to Lewis Taaffe, and within seven minutes they were level as Spence lost possession just inside the Concord half, and the swift counter-attack saw Gardner play the ball through to the impressive Cawley, who steered his shot inside the post to Worner's right.
Moments later Gardner was allowed to turn easily and fired his shot just wide from 25 yards, but it was Sutton who nosed in front again when Spence cut in from the right and hit a low shot which had no great power but was well-placed enough to find the corner of the net as McNamara seemed slow to react.
This time, though, the lead lasted barely a minute as a ball down the right found Cawley outpacing Jamie Collins and crossing low to the edge of the six yard box, where Taaffe nipped in before Beckwith and Worner to score.
The last half hour followed the pattern of the first half as Sutton had plenty of possession, and the pace of Tom Bolarinwa once he had replaced Micky Spillane proved a real threat, but the biggest danger to Concord was self-inflicted as McNamara inexplicably picked up the ball after it had been played back to him, albeit from some thirty yards out.
Unobtrusive referee Colin Lymer awarded the free kick on the edge of the six-yard box, but Fleetwood twice failed to beat McNamara, Shaun Cooper's shot was blocked on the line and McAllister scooped the rebound over the bar.
The keeper atoned for his error, though, with two fine saves, one from Craig Dundas's powerful volley after Bolarinwa's cross had found him on the edge of the penalty area, and then to keep out a downward header from Collins from a free kick, U's unable to scramble the rebound over the line.
McAllister had one late chance but put a header just wide from a right wing cross, but the game almost had a nasty twist for U's as Concord substitute Anthony Jeffrey, who made Kevin Amankwaah's return to action a testing one, crossed to the far post and Gardner's looping header was dipping under the bar until a combination of Worner, at full stretch, and Collins, managed to divert it away for a corner.
