After coming within inches of conceding a goal in the first two minutes, Sutton went on to make light of what had seemed a tough draw in the second qualifying round of the Emirates FA Cup, dominating long spells of the remaining 88 minutes and securing victory with goals either side of half time from Craig McAllister and Kevin Amankwaah.
It could have been very different, though, had the home side taken the chance created for them by Dymon Labonne's quick break with little more than a minute gone. Having reached the penalty area Labonne squared a pass to Matt Johnson, who took a touch before slotting the ball to Ross Worner's left, only to see his shot hit the inside of the post and rebound across goal to safety.
t was a massive escape for Sutton, but they took advantage and were soon creating a chance of their own as Stuart Fleetwood's corner was met by Jamie Collins with a towering header that deflected wide off a combination of post and covering defender. Quick to close the home side down, Sutton enjoyed lots of possession without being able to pose any real threat to their former goalkeeper Tom Lovelock, but then Bolarinwa took advantage of a poor touch by Johnny Herd and accelerated into the space on the right, outpacing Christian Smith to get to the by-line before pulling the ball across to give McAllister a tap-in.
It put the seal on a fine first half performance from U's, and within ten minutes of the restart they had taken an even firmer grip on the game, with Bolarinwa again involved as he chased back to win possession and then attract a foul midway inside the home half which saw Mason Walsh booked. Fleetwood's free kick evaded everyone in the penalty area to reach Amankwaah beyond the far post, and he poked a shot beyond Lovelock and inside the far post.
As they had done a week earlier at Weston-super-Mare, Sutton protected their lead well, with Simon Downer a reassuring presence at the back as he returned for his 200th appearance, and it wasn't until ten minutes from time that the home side had a sight of goal, Anthony Church's header from Josh Ekim's free kick safely held by Worner.
The keeper also saved from the free-scoring Elliott Buchanan, and Collins cleared off the line from Charlie Sheringham after Worner had failed to claim the ball on the edge of the penalty area, but that was in the last seconds of the game and by then Collins had also featured at the other end, heading over from a right wing corner when he should have done better. Lovelock had to go full stretch to keep out Dan Spence's shot as Sutton saw the game out with a degree of comfort to claim a fine win.
