Anyone who lives in Sutton can get a confidential HIV test as part of National HIV Testing Week which takes place from 22 – 30 November in the run up to World AIDS Day on 1 December.
Sutton Council has commissioned the West London Gay Men’s Project to provide testing at a local pharmacy to increase the options available to residents.
Depending on where you go, rapid testing is available that provides an instant result for anyone who is concerned about their sexual health.
According to Public Health England, approximately one in four people living with HIV are unaware of their status. It has been estimated that over half of overall HIV transmissions are due to people who are unaware that they have the disease.
The earlier people are diagnosed the better as they can access effective treatment, which greatly improves their health, and can reduce their chances of infecting others.
Late diagnosis is one of the biggest contributing factors to morbidity and mortality of people with HIV. This has significant implications for health and social care services.
During National HIV Testing Week, HIV testing will be promoted by local services which can provide information and advice.
Sutton Council’s Director of Public Health, Dr Nicola Lang, said:
“Over half of all HIV transmission is thought to be due to people who are not aware of their HIV status. Ending the stigma around HIV and getting tested is really important.
“People who are aware of their diagnosis can access effective treatment which not only greatly improves their health, but also reduces their chances of infecting others. I would encourage people to get tested. It is quick and confidential.”
