Epsom Medical Equipment Fund and the Leatherhead Lions Club have joined together to purchase a welcome gift for the respiratory department at Epsom Hospital this winter: two brand new breathing aids costing £7,200.
The NIPPY Clearway machines will prove a particularly welcome addition during the winter months, which usually see an increase in the number of people attending hospital suffering from breathing difficulties. Katie Kyritsis, Acting Team Lead for Inpatient Physiotherapy at Epsom Hospital explained: “The NIPPY Clearway is used for airway clearance and to assist coughing in those with reduced cough function. As well as being quite distressing, not being able to cough can pose a number of risks, including increased chance of chest infection, pneumonia or aspiration. Two members of the portering team at Sutton Hospital have been recognised by their colleagues for their dedication and high quality of work.
Brian Parvia and Michael Stone, who have given a combined total of 51 years’ service to the trust, were nominated by no less than six of their colleagues at Sutton Hospital, which led to them being chosen as the recipients of the Chief Executive’s Award of Excellence The Sutton Integrated Digital Care Record (Sutton IDCR) is a secure electronic record that brings together health and social care for patients registered with a Sutton GP. Sutton IDCR will share information from residents' GP and social care records with local Urgent Care, Accident and Emergency, GP out-of-hours service and community health services. Health records will be available for adults and children, but social care records will initially only be available for adults
Viewing care information in one place means health and social care professionals can work more efficiently to provide the right care. Epsom and St Helier hospitals have teamed up with a local charity to help spread some Christmas cheer to patients going home alone from hospital over the festive season. Epsom based charity Three Cheers for Cheers, formed in 2011, raise funds and collect donations throughout the year to go towards the creation of their Christmas hampers, which they put together especially for people who live alone, many of whom are elderly. A new set of top tips to get the most from every GP appointment has just been pro
Whether it is your initial appointment with your GP or a specialist there are a few things you can prepare in advance that will help you to get the most out of your consultation. If you need support, take a relative, carer or friend If you feel you might need support, take a relative or friend for support. They can help you understand or explain. Take notes to help you Before you see your GP, it might help to make some notes so you are clear in your own mind what you want to say. Also include any questions that you would like to ask. If you do not understand something - Ask again Make sure you fully understand what has been said before you leave the room. If you don’t, then don’t be afraid of asking your GP to go through things again. If you are unhappy - Ask to see another GP If you’re not happy, you can ask to see another GP in the practice. You can also change GP practices, but you should as a first step always discuss your concerns with a practice staff member first. Could the practice nurse deal with your problem? In many cases, a practice nurse could deal with your concern, so consider this as an alternative to making an appointment with a GP. The surgery may also run special clinics such as asthma and diabetes, so make sure you find out. New parents, volunteers and maternity staff from Epsom and St Helier hospitals took the time to recognise the lives of premature babies recently, as they marked World Prematurity Day.
The group gathered in the Neonatal Unit at St Helier Hospital, which provides intensive and specialised care to babies who are born from as early as 23 weeks. Matron for the unit, Catherine Swanson said: “Each year, our unit cares for approximately 350 babies, with some of our smallest patients weighing as little as 500 grams (equivalent to just two blocks of butter). The dedicated cardiology and respiratory ward (C6) at St Helier Hospital has re-opened following extensive refurbishment and improvement works that cost £757,000 and took four months to complete. The project, which was funded as part of the £18million set aside to purchase state-of-the-art equipment and improve the buildings at Epsom and St Helier hospitals this year, has seen the Coronary Care Unit (CCU) and the main ward area of C6 transformed into a bright and welcoming environment that boasts top class facilities and a range of new equipment. |
