If you have concerns about the future of the National Health Service then Keep Our St Helier Hospital Safe campaigners are urging residents to attend a meeting tomorrow (Tuesday) at Balham Baptist Church.
The meeting which starts at 7.30pm will look at what it claims is the "privitisation of the health service." "If you believe all that you read and see in the media, you would be forgiven for thinking that the NHS is on its last legs, and no longer fit for purpose. However, there is a much bigger story going on, one that is nearly all but being ignored by our news papers and television: The privatisation of our health service," said spokesperson Colin Crilly. "The fact is that a state-run health service is the most efficient health service. All of the layers of bureaucracy that have been introduced, as well as companies coming in with a profit-before-care agenda, have left our health service in the poor state that we see today. "We also have the legacy of the appalling debts from PFI (Private Finance Initiative) contracts. These contracts come with outrageous levels of interest that will take decades to pay back. In real terms, government investment in our NHS has been reduced for some time. Beware, we are heading towards a US-style health insurance system. "If you are concerned about these issues, want to find out more, and would like to help save our hospitals and health services, we urge you to attend our public meeting on Tuesday 27 October. The venue is the Balham Baptist Church, 21 Ramsden Rd, SW12 8QX and the meeting starts at 7.30pm." Demolition is underway of the former New Town Public House in Lind Road.
Bob Steel, pubs officer for Sutton CAMRA who spoke in its favour at an unsuccessful attempt to save the building, called the demolition 'an act of pure vandalism'. "Sutton's planning committee has allowed Youngs to demolish the finest building in a so-called area of 'Special Local Character' and replace it with a mediocre modern block. "In my view there was there little serious attempt to retain the building as a public house, but letting the building itself go is totally inexcusable" he continued. Sutton's GPs are leading the way nationally with a pilot project which will focus on delivering on improved care for the borough's elderly residents living in care homes
Plans are underway from Sutton's GPs to make an initiative called the Sutton Integrated Digital Care Record available from November.
Wallington and Carshalton MP Tom Brake is calling for better data collection to improve the care and treatment available for women with incurable secondary breast cancer. He was prompted to act after a meeting with Breast Cancer Care and victims in Parliament this week.
Healthwatch Sutton volunteers will be visiting various outpatients departments within St Helier Hospital from Monday 19th October 2015.
"Our team of dedicated volunteers are on a mission to find out about peoples experiences of using the hospitals Outpatient Departments. You will be able to spot out volunteers as they will all have identification on them," said a spokesperson. "One of our priorities for the year ahead is to investigate Outpatients appointments this follows the responses we have received from our What matters to you? feedback system. "Residents and Healthwatch members expressed concerns around Outpatients, many were unhappy with the length of time they had to wait to get an appointment, the amount of time they got to spend with the consultant and on some occasions the lack of information they received once they had an appointment booked. "We were keen to investigate this issue further, we have spoken with staff at St Helier hospital who are keen to work with us. "In order to be in with a chance of winning a £25 voucher (of your choice) we ask that you complete a short questionnaire about your outpatient appointment. all responses to the questionnaires are anonymous and you will be asked to complete a separate form in order to be entered into the prize draw. "Look out for one of our Healthwatch Sutton volunteers at your next Outpatient appointment in St Helier." The Care Quality Commission will shortly be inspecting services provided by Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust starting on November 10.
The CQC is the independent regulator of all health and care services in England. It registers, monitors and inspects services to make sure they provide safe, compassionate, high-quality care, and we encouarge them to improve. "Your experience of services help us to understand what is good and bad at these hospitals so please get in touch using the contact details, www.cqc.org.uk/sye; [email protected]; 03000 616161" Nurses caring for patients living with dementia at Epsom and St Helier hospitals have developed a series of initiatives to help connect with those patients, keep them comfortable and support their families.
