As well as picking up simple tips from the resident chef, locals will also be able to enter the Sutton Food Quiz – answer foodie questions about the borough for the chance to win a month’s supply of vegetables from Sutton Community Farm.
If you like what you taste at one of the six fortnightly events, recreate the easy yet healthy meals at home with a discounted Recipe Box of fresh ingredients from the farm.
The Sutton People’s Kitchen aims to bring people together to celebrate food – making healthy eating easy and promoting local food growing.
Sutton Community Farm, in partnership with Greenwich Cooperative Development Agency, is being supported and funded by Sutton Council’s Public Health team. This project also includes school cook clubs.
David Tchilingirian, Sutton Council’s Public Health Commissioner for Health Improvement, said:
“The People’s Kitchen is all about exploring innovative ways to promote healthier lifestyles for local residents. As well as providing people with lots of practical tips to eat well, the programme will help us to better understand what people in Sutton want in order to get healthier.
“By bringing the community together, and making good food more accessible, we can work towards making Sutton a healthier and happier borough – and have a bit of fun in the kitchen while we’re at it.”
Samuel Smith, Managing Director of Sutton Community Farm, said:
“At our farm, we harness the wonderful community spirit in Sutton to bring tasty sustainably grown food to the borough. The farm is an inclusive, shared space and we want everyone to get involved.
“That is why we are delighted to team up with the council to inspire the wider borough to adopt healthier habits and learn to love local food. Please do come along to one of our workshops to find out just how delicious healthy eating can Plantsbe.”
Sutton People’s Kitchen launches this Thursday 23 April at the St George’s Day Food Fair and will then be on the High Street, next to Waterstone’s, fortnightly on Saturdays from 25 April to 4 July.
Throughout the project, residents will be encouraged to tweet their healthy meals, share tips and celebrate local food on social media using the hashtag #SuttonsCooking.
