Carshalton College open event season starts tomorrow (October 21) as it opens its doors to prospective students and their parents, in a drive ensure local young people are aware of the learning and career opportunities available to them at their local college.

Budding engineering students at Carshalton College are celebrating being successful participants in an exciting programme designed to fire up their design and engineering skills and teach them how games design skills can be applied to the built environment. Their project was to design a new leisure Centre for Central Kingston and the group of students put forward were successful. Work on the project is just beginning!
Students worked on a range of engineering challenges including battling to keep agolf ball off the ground on a tower of spaghetti and jelly babies. The students' projects were observed under the watchful eyes of their Atkins Global mentors. "Choose from an exciting array of short courses, designed to fit around busy schedules. All one day courses are just £30! "Courses are based at Sutton College’s Sutton Centre and offer short, intense studies into various interesting subjects. "All classes start at 10am and finish at 3pm. "Refreshments, including sandwiches and snacks will be available on site for purchase." Fourteen Carshalton Boys Sports College year 12s students as part of their course have to complete fieldwork & research in different environments. so to fulfill the brief they recently went to Camber Sands.
The aim was to investigate the threats & management of sand dunes at Camber Sands . Students conducted linear transects across the dunes to investigate the impact of threats on the dune development. Work on the extention to Greenshaw High School has started with contractors starting work late last month.
The contractor, Thomas Sinden, commenced work on site at Greenshaw on Monday 28th September. The initial work included erection of hoardings, asbestos removal, tree removal and levelling the ground. The PiXL Edge has been introduced to Year 8 and Year 12 Greenshaw students
"The PiXL Edge is a framework for schools to develop and recognise in students those personal attributes essential for employability and life. "The scheme, which has been launched at Greenshaw initially to Year 8 and Year 12, focuses on students developing five key attributes: leadership, organisation, initiative, resilience and communication. "There are three different levels to qualify. Year 8 students are starting at level 1 will gain PiXL Apprentice and Year 12 at Level 2 will gain PiXL Graduate. "At each level, there are a variety of approved activities that students can undertake to achieve the attributes. The number of activities that need to be completed varies depending on the level. Students then log their activities in a database where it is then verified. These activities can then be used to support personal statements and showcase how students have developed their character," said a spokesperson. Two of our Year 8 Stanley Park students represented Sutton & District Athletics Club in the opening fixture of the East Surrey League at Lloyd Park on Saturday 3rd October.
Jack Simpson and Luke Ashwood completed the two-mile course in 12mins 33s and 13mins 24s respectively. "These excellent performances mean the team currently sit second in the table behind early leaders Hercules Wimbledon. Jack and Luke will compete again on December 5th at Wimbledon Common. It is great to see our pupils participate in events outside of school and we wish them both all the best in their next race," said a spokesperson Sutton High School Junior school students invited representatives of the Salvation Army to the school recently as part of their Harvest Festival reflections to talk about Sutton Food Bank. "As part of our Harvest Festival at the Junior School, we invited Major Cotterill from the Salvation Army to talk to the girls about Sutton Food Bank in assembly yesterday. Thank you to all our Junior School families for donating food and over £600, which we have forwarded to the Salvation Army," said a spokesperson. Classic FM award winning musician and Sutton High School pupil Seung Hye Park performed a piano recital at the Cheam Road school on Thursday October 8
The programme included works by Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt, Rachmaninov and Messiaen "What an incredible evening it's been in the Senior Hall, with our Classic FM award-winning student Seung Hye Park delivering an amazing piano recital of 11 pieces from memory," said a spokespperson. "Seung Hye played pieces by composers including Mozart, Chopin and Rachmaninov. "She finished with La Campanella by Liszt and got an immediate standing ovation from the audience. At the end, Seung Hye had photos taken with guests including the Deputy Mayor of Sutton as well as her Year 11 friends who came to support her. Bravo Seung Hye!" Orchard Hill College students decided to get involved in Global’s Make Some Noise campaign recently
"The College held a brilliant event to raise funds and awareness of the campaign," said a spokesperson. "They sold vegetables grown in the College allotment, freshly made pickles and jams, tea, coffee, cakes, biscuits, bric-a-brac and general goods donated by staff and students, and some went in to the community to hand out flyers about the campaign. It was such a brilliant day that not only raised money for the charity, but enabled our students in so many ways." The charity was created by Global, the media and entertainment group, and helps to change young lives “by supporting specially selected projects up and down the country, which deliver life-changing work to youngsters and their families in their communities. They are often small, operating on a shoestring, or tackling an issue that is little understood," said a spokesperson for the campaign. |
