Sutton Council is to present plans for the London Cancer Hub – a proposed new global centre for cancer research and treatment in south London – to borough councillors. The council is seeking approval for the London Cancer Hub Development Framework at the Housing, Economy and Business Committee on Tuesday 27 September. Almost 130 volunteers from Epsom and St Helier hospitals gathered at Epsom Downs Racecourse for a special event held in recognition of the valuable contribution they make to patients, visitors and staff.
Although the sky may have been a little overcast, the mood was anything but as volunteers from across the hospitals came together to enjoy an afternoon of tea, cake and music. Local MPs The Rt Hon Chris Grayling (Epsom and Ewell), Tom Brake (Carshalton and Wallington) and Paul Scully (Sutton and Cheam), were on-hand to honour the volunteers alongside the trust’s Chief Executive, Daniel Elkeles, and Chairman, Laurence Newman. Following the success of last year’s campaign, South West London and St. George’s Mental Health NHS Trust is celebrating October Mental Health Month with over 50 events across south west London. The theme this year is ‘talk about it’ which aims to encourage discussion around mental health and stamp out stigma and discrimination.

Head Orthoptist Eleanor Burley and Consultant Paediatric Ophthalmologist Jane Leitch are taking on the challenge to raise funds for a new clinic based at the Tadworth Children’s Trust, where children and young people with brain injuries are cared for. Currently, patients at Tadworth have to travel to Epsom or St Helier for their ophthalmology care, but the new clinic will be based at the trust. Sutton Council’s Admiral Nurses service, which provides specialist support for borough families living with dementia, has been shortlisted for this year’s Health Service Journal (HSJ) Awards. The service has been shortlisted in the category of CCG and Local Authority Integrated commissioning for Carers. Judges had a tough job scoring and commended the high quality of entries this year. The Admiral Nurses are specialist dementia nurses who play a unique, caring role by working across different parts of the health and social care system. They ensure that the needs of family carers and people with dementia can be addressed in a co-ordinated way. Sutton is one of a few local authorities in England to host an Admiral Nurse Service team. The service is a partnership between Sutton Council, NHS Sutton CCG and Dementia UK, the national charity that develops and maintains Admiral Nursing. Alastair McLellan, Editor of HSJ, said: “With the NHS experiencing a tough time as funding fails to keep up with demand, the HSJ Awards are once again the best reminder of the excellence the service is capable of. Taken together the entries to the HSJ Awards represent work which, directly or indirectly, has saved thousands of lives and enhanced many times that number.” The shortlisted organisations will complete presentations and interviews to a judging panel made up of senior and influential figures from the health sector. The winners will be announced at a prestigious ceremony on 23 November at the Intercontinental O2 in London. September is Blood Cancer Awareness Month, and Epsom and St Helier Hospital trust has shared details of their Haematology Support Group. The group offers support for those affected by hodgkin or non-hodgkin lymphoma, leukaemia or myeloma. The group meets each month, and sessions include a focus on a particular topic delivered by a guest speaker. South West London and St George’s Mental Health NHS Trust has completed the first stage of the procurement process for the Estate Modernisation Programme (EMP).
The programme will deliver two new hospitals, develop extensive community services and provide new homes and parkland for the local community. The first stage of the process was a key milestone for the Trust and involved selecting the ‘Long List’ of six development partners. The Trust has a three stage process to select the right development partner to deliver the whole of the Estate Modernisation Programme. |
