Sutton United 1-0 Dagenham & Redbridge
After the disappointment in the result, if not necessarily a lot of the peformance, at Chester, there was no better way for Sutton to bounce back than with a victory against one of the early pacesettrs in the Vanarama National League, and they achived this on Monday with a performance of fluency in the first half, and battling spirit and character as the game went on and Dagenham & Redbridge pressed for an equaliser. Even after going down to ten men for the last ten minutes when Simon Downer was sent off for a foul on substitute Paul Benson, U's had enough to protect their lead in a tense finish and end Dagenham's four match winning run. This Saturday is the annual 'Non League Day', designed to promote non-league football on a day when there are no Premier League or Championship games because of England's World Cup qualifying game in Slovakia.

A late penalty condemned Carshalton Athletic to their first defeat of the season as they failed to convert a dominant second-half display into points on Saturday, writes James Barrett.

This thrilling overall contest began with a bang as Chipstead opened the scoring on two minutes – Ricky Korboa gave away a free kick on our left and Chris O’Flaherty curled an angled shot past Alex Kozakis. After ten minutes of shadow-boxing, in which the two sides tested each other out without incident, the U’s felt confident enough to commit more men forward and never looked back. A Simon Downer long-throw was punched back out to him by goalkeeper Ross and the veteran defender chanced his arm with a first-time effort from twenty-five yards, but with the keeper stranded he saw his shot curl wide of the near post. The U’s midfield had gained the upper hand and when the visitors had a free-kick cleared, the increasingly influential Roarie Deacon broke free in the middle and fed Maxime Biamou on his outside. The French striker raced down the right before sliding the ball back inside for Deacon, who had continued his run, to surge into the penalty area. The former Crawley man didn’t realise how much space he had and snatched slightly at his shot dragging the ball wide of the near post. Sutton started their defence of the Ryman Youth League Central Division title with a hard-fought 3-1 victory at Chertsey recently.
Sutton started the game firmly on the front foot and should have taken an early lead when Kieran Rhule’s long range effort was parried away, then Lamar Fowlkes saw his strike pushed wide for a corner. Jean-Luc Kinsaba then pulled his shot wide after cutting in from the left, before Andrius Lucauskas saw his strike from the right parried by the keeper before being scrambled clear for a corner. |
