City Hall recently hosted a summit with some of the leading figures from London’s life sciences industry to discuss how to best protect the sector in the aftermath of the country’s decision to leave the European Union.
The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, aims to protect London’s status as a world-leading hub for life science companies and a powerhouse for scientific innovation and research. NHS Sutton Clinical Commissioning Group has announced that local mental health service 'Sutton Uplift' has been shortlisted in the 2016 Health Service Journal Value in Healthcare Awards. Sutton has been praised for the service it provides in the Acute, Community and/or Primary Care Services Redesign award category.
The 'Sutton Uplift' service operates in the heart of the community supporting anyone who is 18 years and over, lives in the borough of Sutton or is registered with a Sutton GP who has a mental health or wellbeing need, albeit a life stressor or an emotional difficulty. An opportunity to ask questions about local issues in mental health and social care to a panel of decision makers and local representatives on World Mental Health Day has been arranged.
The panel will include David Bradley, Chief Executive of the SW London Mental Health Trust; a local MP; the Executive Head of Adult Social Care and Safeguarding, and others. The Department of Health is now seeking views from patients, and the public on how health and care information should be used. A public consultation was launched in July to do this. Sutton Council is to present plans for the London Cancer Hub – a proposed new global centre for cancer research and treatment in south London – to borough councillors. The council is seeking approval for the London Cancer Hub Development Framework at the Housing, Economy and Business Committee on Tuesday 27 September. Almost 130 volunteers from Epsom and St Helier hospitals gathered at Epsom Downs Racecourse for a special event held in recognition of the valuable contribution they make to patients, visitors and staff.
Although the sky may have been a little overcast, the mood was anything but as volunteers from across the hospitals came together to enjoy an afternoon of tea, cake and music. Local MPs The Rt Hon Chris Grayling (Epsom and Ewell), Tom Brake (Carshalton and Wallington) and Paul Scully (Sutton and Cheam), were on-hand to honour the volunteers alongside the trust’s Chief Executive, Daniel Elkeles, and Chairman, Laurence Newman. Following the success of last year’s campaign, South West London and St. George’s Mental Health NHS Trust is celebrating October Mental Health Month with over 50 events across south west London. The theme this year is ‘talk about it’ which aims to encourage discussion around mental health and stamp out stigma and discrimination.
