This was the first time that cadets from all London boroughs had taken part and the first time that Sutton had won the competition, which was held at the Met Police public order training centre at Gravesend, Kent in July.
In front of a packed hall of parents at the Sutton Cadet's annual review at Overton Grange School, both Shane and Joshua were praised in citations read by Sutton's Safer Neighbourhood Inspector Neil Tyre, who has responsibility for overseeing the running of Sutton's cadets, who meet in two groups - one on Tuesdays at Overton Grange High School and the other on Thursdays at Stanley Park High School.
Shane, who attends the Stanley Park group, was described as excelling in outdoor competitions whilst always being prepared to support less experienced cadets. He went on to be the flag bearer at the Trafalgar Square and Remembrance Day Parades. "He has kept a consistently high level of volunteering throughout his service," said Insp Tyre.
Joshua, of the Overton Grange group, was described as being reliable, respectful and responsible and always sets a good example whilst being ready with new ideas and activities. A cadet since January 2013, he is now Deputy Head Cadet. "He has risen through the ranks and thrives on responsibility," said Insp Tyre.
One of the evening's award winners, Cadet Instructor Abi Gambel, who was part of the winning team at Gravesend, told the audience: "Our win in Gravesend shows what a great unit Sutton is."
Retired Sutton borough police commander Guy Ferguson, who is President of Sutton's Neighbourhood Watch, said: "Sutton's cadets are all about young people putting themselves forward to take a lead, take part, serve their community and to be good citizens. They have had a fantastic year and scooped more awards than any other London borough."
He described the Sutton cadets' win in Gravesend as a fitting tribute to mark the last ten years of success since the Sutton cadets launched in the borough.
PC Gill Nolan, who runs the cadets with PC Lorraine Roche, said: "We are so proud of our cadets and for all that they have achieved."
