Homeshare is an initiative where trained volunteers generously open their homes to older individuals, hosting small groups for a meal.
"Evidence shows that engaging in social activities is one of the key factors in successful ageing, and creates noticeably positive effects for people in later life. We are committed to empowering Sutton's older population via the consistent provision of a variety of social opportunities, coupled with personal engagement and support to encourage them to explore and attend these activities. We aim to expand older adults’ range of social contacts, and broaden their participation in community life," said a spokesperson.
Homeshare users comment on their experience:
"Before Homeshare, I didn't see anyone apart from family on a Saturday. This was the only time I went out. After I lost my husband, I just saw my four walls. I don't know why I didn't try Homeshare before. I got stuck in a rut and not going out. It's lovely now. I phone another member of the group during the week. I get on really well with all the other ladies; I have made some really good friends”
“Thursday is the highlight of my week which is when I come to Homeshare”
“I like coming to Homeshare and meeting all the different types of characters we have here. I feel comfortable and safe here”
“I did not know people were in the same position as me. Now I feel the world is not closed to me. I’m quite shy and don’t want to spend time with strangers, so I like Homeshare”
“I have made lots of friends since coming here. Loneliness is the problem (for older people) and social contact is what we want. I live on my own and look forward to coming here. My family doesn’t live close by. Once we get social contact at Homeshare, we don’t stop talking”
