The lecture will be illustrated by extracts from radio and television programmes such as Simon Schama’s The History of the Jews, Good Friday on Radio 3,Thought for the Day and The Story of Islam.
The BBC was set going by a remarkable son of the Manse, John Reith, with an idea of the role of the established Christian church as central to its work. Indeed, in a wider way the whole urgency, generosity, and vision of the whole BBC task - to inform, educate and entertain - was informed by a Christian sense of values.
But the BBC now represents and talks into a nation of many faiths and none. How does it represent faiths to each other when faith is politicised? How should it deal with moral issues?
For those rushing home from work, the Oasis café will be open from 6pm selling light suppers (soup, baked potatoes, cake, tea and coffee) in the Terrace Room.
