Following the letter published Thursday in The Guardian, Tom called for the UK to remain in the EU to ensure animal welfare is prioritised.
Tom said: “We must understand that through working with other EU countries, we have enacted a wide range of important measures that safeguard animal welfare—from the wild to the farm. Brexit could seriously undermine all the hard work that is underway in the EU to support animal welfare.”
Through international cooperation, the EU has created laws that protect millions of animals in Europe from confinement, cosmetics-related cruelty, and farm animal cloning. However, as the letter warns, more protective measures need to be undertaken, and leaving the EU could hinder these efforts.
As the letter states, "Individual governments can come under significant pressure from corporate lobbyists to weaken or remove binding standards on animal protection. In this context, EU-wide minimum standards to tackle animal cruelty are more important than ever”.
